Why why why must I listen to such terrible music????
Why does everyone think they can make a jazz record?

3. see, that's the sad thing
Some of the shit I have to listen to is worse than that.

People either do really crappy songs, or they choose great songs and massacre them, or they put out a really great sounding record and package it so crappily that no one shopping in a store would ever give it a second glance or they have talent, a good rhythm section, decent songs....but it's still boring as hell.

2. "your local forecast...accurate and dependable...from the weather channel"
That's the first thing I think of when I hear most post-70's non-free jazz.

9. Uh o.....whad'd I say?!
I thought I was commisserating with you! By "shitty" jazz, I thought you meant that 'orrid post-fusion "smooth jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" wankery.

Sorry If I brought you down...I think you rock, BTW!

:applause:

14. No - I just meant...you're right.
And sales for jazz continue to decline...and so do my chances for job security. Being the jazz buyer for one of the top jazz chains in the country is only good if you're actually selling some jazz.

Listening to the forthcoming Joshua Redman record now - much more promising.

16. that shit may be smooth, but it ain't jazz..
as I'm always having to explain to a friend of mine who insists on playing the "smooth jazz" station whenever I ride in his car.

18. Exactly
Who was it that said, right after Charlie Parker died, "We get paid to take people's chances for them"?

Jazz is about not doing something the same way every goddam time. It's about growth, and putting your aesthetic on the line, and acknowledging the unknown-- all that shit that risk-averse yuppie scum can't deal with. That's why there's so little market for jazz-- and why so much of what goes by the name sucks so bad.

5. Put on some Zorn.
Motherfucker can blast ANYTHING else out of your head.

I mean, not all of his records are good... but any of them will make you forget whatever it was you just listened to.

I have tons of great music at my fingertips. But I must also waste my time with this drivel.

10. They were really overrated, weren't they?
Worst rythym section since Dennis Wilson/Bruce Jonston.

17. Guuuuuuhhhhhhh
I used to adore prepping for my radio show, but then around mid-1992, the stack of new indie label releases I had to go through every week started to be like triple or quadruple its previous size, and FAR fewer of them were at all listenable.

Fuck you, Pearl Jam, in the ear, forever.

12. Selling points
John Zorn, King of Amnesia!

Yeah, that'll work.

I should note that I have a copy of Leng T'che (sp?), unquestionably one of the most obnoxious, irritating records I have ever heard. And I'm one of those people that thinks of Metal Machine Music as quaint.

I don't know the answer to progmom's dilemma. In theory I'm all for DIY recordmaking-- I've made a few myself-- but in practice, there was a virtue in having people with actual work experience making and selling records decide whether you were ready to record. Most people aren't, and the fact that you like to play and your intimates tell you how good you are doesn't change that.

That being said, progmom, can I send you some of my records? :hi:
