Imagine that this person was perfect for you in every way imaginable, except in his/her political views. Would you go there? Have you?

She was pretty cool and all, but when it came to politics we just really clashed on views. Would of been easier but I've gotten to be pretty vocal and strong in my beliefs to just keep quiet and bite my lip for a relationship.
So we parted ways..
My fiancee was more conservative in her views, and her family is as well. But slowly and surely I've brought her and her parents over the middle to our side. Rest of her family are just idiots, sorry to say but they just vote without considering issues (her sisters voted for * just because *sigh*).
We still have differing views on some issues, but thats ok..makes for good discussions hehe and yeah her dad still listens to repug filth on AM radio, but thats what I'm around for =)

6. Sounds like an oxymoron to me... |
|
... since someone with the beliefs of the current crop of Republicans, supporting the sort of government that they do, would be completely alien to me. That sort of person would be likely to hold values that would be in pretty much complete opposition to mine. Not much of a chance of an enduring relationship in that situation.

The British Tories are not quite that bad (yet?), and so I'm happy still to have a number of them as friends; and would happily get into a relationship with one. Looking at the freeper wing-nuts I'm not so sure - and besides any relationship would have to be on hypocritical 'Gannon terms' as he potters off each morning to join in the homophobic rants pretending to be straight.

...there were many whom I knew probably were. But I was younger then, and really wasn't into commitment in my younger days, so politics weren't really what I was after. But it was the times. I came of age in the 70's, and the 70's were somewhat of a hedonistic time. We weren't really interested in what someone's party affiliation was. We were interested in drugs, sex, and rock n' roll....

18. I did once, ACCIDENTALLY. |
|
I kept deciding to overlook his occasional insensitive, rude, or downright judgmental remarks about women who need to exercise their right to choose for whatever reason. I was younger and MONUMENTALLY stupid. I discovered, much too late, that his insensitive (read=misogynist) opinions weren't so much a reflection of one of two "conservative" (read=misogynist) "values" left over from being raised by two bigoted Republicans as they were...well, the views of an anti-choice future Bush-supporter. It unfortunately took a figurative slap in the face to snap me out of my denial and I curse myself for having entered that relationship and stayed in it for as depressingly long as I did every day of my life. "Conservatives" can call their oppressive bullshit whatever they want, but it's oppressive bullshit. I would, if I had any faith in "romantic" relationships left, never, ever in a thousand years consider dating a non-Democrat again. I even wore a pin to that effect all throughout the election cycle: "I only sleep with Democrats." That helped me start a few conversations with undecided voters. But to answer the original question: HELL NO. NEVER AGAIN. Being with that person seriously helped mess up my life in a regrettably permanent sense. So sorry I thought I could "get over" a sick little anti-choice fanatics "views" for the sake of "love."

26. I nearly married a Republican |
|
The first love of my life was a pro-life republican. She was beautiful, intelligent, kind and caring. She is a child psychologist who specializes in treating children with autism. I disagree with her political views, but she is a wonderful person. She married another hardcore democrat and they have two great kids. I saw her at a funeral recently and we got into a very familiar debate about who we would be voting for. She of course intended to vote for bush.
Our engagement ended due to the difficulty in living in different parts of the country. Her work with autistic children kept her in NY, where she founded and directs a center dedicated to research and treatment. My work took me to Oregon and Washington for several years. It worked out for the best since I met my wife and she met her husband.
I enjoyed disagreeing with her on political issues and the fighting was never personal. I have a deep respect for the political process and believe that conservatives and liberals have more commonalities than differences. The differences need to be debated and often compromised to achieve a just result. It is the fight that makes each side sharper and more prepared to defend its position. In a relationship this can work out wonderfully for some.

29. Probably and yes - sort of |
|
I say probably because people discover my political view/guess them very quickly, and many people decline to discuss politics with me.
I move in a number of circles with conservatives, and so it is likely that I will have dated one at some point.
I say 'sort of' because I've never been out with an American (though many round here are most appealing), and thus not a Republican but rather a British Conservative (fewer complete wing-nuts than the Pubby Party).
I have friends from right across the political spectrum, and am happy to be like that. I discuss politics with many friends and do so vigourously. I would be perfectly happy to have a boy-friend who was also a Tory, potentially even quite a hard-core Tory; in many ways the idea of arguing politics whilst in bed sounds like fun to me.

Last year, I got to be friends with and had a major crush on this girl who pretty much fits that description. We had a lot in common and got along really well. Eerily similar family backgrounds. And she was beautiful; kind of my ideal look. Only big problem was that, while I don't know that she was a Republican (she was basically apolitical) she had voted for Shrub. :puke:
Oh yeah, and she was already engaged to this other guy... I guess that's pretty significant, too.

unknowingly, since I never cared about this type of stuff before 1994 or so, when the pro-choice issue slapped me hard in the face. But I know most of the guys have been pretty liberal (I dated mostly musicians and artists for a long time- growing up in Austin, it was easy).
I finally started voting Democrat about 9 years ago, and from then on, it became much more important to me in a mate.
When I posted my profile for the internet personals site where reprehensor and I met, I specifically stated how opposed I was to Republicans, cowboys, uber religious types, and anyone out to impress me with their wealth, car, or possessions.
It worked! FSC

Do we agree on everything? No. But we respect each other's differences. (however, I married a Democrat and he married a republican) Dating is one thing, lifetime commitment is another :)

|
I had an on and off 3 year relationship with a lily white, conservative, born again Christian, former military guy. We had a bizarre situation (relationship?)--the sex was the only glue. One minute he would be listening to the 700 Club or Benny Hinn. The next minute we were fornicating like rabbits in heat. If he was not listening to Rush Limbaugh, Christian radio, or watching NASCAR, he was in strip clubs, gambling, and getting drunk on (yuck) Coors Light. I feel dirty just thinking about that experience.

And he was not perfect for me.
One time we were studying in my living room. I was sitting at a table. He went to my bathroom (this was college), and when he came out, he was only wearing his jeans.
I wondered where the hell his shirt went, why he took it off.
Then he tried to say "Hey, um.." and started walking over to me.
He suddenly bent over at the waist, convulsing, his eyes rolling back in his head. I didn't know what was wrong with him, thought maybe he was having a seizure.
He quickly grabbed his shirt, held it over the front of his pants, grabbed his books and left without a word of explanation.
A guy friend explained to me later what happened. He couldn't even GET ACROSS THE ROOM.
Not that it would have happened anyway, but HELL.

I simply cannot date someone that has no morals...or no brain. Seriously, I can barely stand to be in the same room with Republicans most of the time, can't imagine dating one.

A Republican Wiccan.
It's been years, but I'm still trying to figure out that one. And I might run into her this fall. I should ask her how her allegiance to her party is doing.

can't say they were otherwise perfect in every way imaginable. LOL. But I've dated a few.
Some were ok, some were rude.

I've posted a few anti-Hummer threads and they've all come gunning for me. I posted a link to one such thread in response to one of your posts in the "Would you date a Hummer driver" thread. There is also one that is still active that got banished to the Meeting Room. We've got 'em all right, and they are touchy bastards. There are also a number of other DU members who feel compelled to defend Hummer drivers, though they say them themselves don't own the monster's themselves. Read through some of those threads. It was startling to me. I thought I created what amounted to no more than a satyric poll and they went insane! :freak:

84. That's a shame. I've seen some of those threads and all I can say is |
|
that DU attracts all kinds of people, some of them pretty freakin' weird.
Someone posted a link to an article about Hummers and SUV's in general which included a long laundry list about what's really, really wrong with them. I wished I'd saved it.
Where I live (an overwhelmingly liberal neighborhood) there are a handful of Repukes that drive Hummers and the teenagers run around the parking lots slapping stickers on them that say: "Our soldiers are dying in their 'Hummers' in Iraq while you smugly play soldier in yours". Love it!

Then, I married a (corporate, money-guy) Republican, and now... HE's NOT! (well, he still has money, thank goodness)... BUT... Now.... He's a card-carrying, sign-totin', letter-writin', Vermont-livin' INDEPENDENT! What a guy!

73. my bf is difficult to understand... |
|
I fell in love w/ my boyfriend not knowing his political leanings, although at the time politics were not as important to me as they are now.(was only 18 at the time) I knew we agreed on a lot of issues, but I was not too happy with him b/c he was just so naive when it comes to politics. He comes from a family that NEVER discusses their political views (I still haven't been able to figure out if his parents are dem or repub.), and so he got fed all of this pro Bush stuff from his best friend and of course he bought into all of the lies (eg If Gore were president, guns would be outlawed). Although he had more beliefs that lined with the democrats, he still believed that Bush made the better president, we should trust him on Iraq, etc. Now I believe I have enlighted him somewhat, and he no longer likes Bush, but to be honest if I were looking for someone to date again I would want someone who is more informed when it comes to politics and who cared more about current/world events. As far as dating a TRUE republican, I don't think I could do it. My bf's best friend (who I was talking about earlier) is a great guy, we get along really well, have the same type of personalities and personal morals, but his political beliefs are so totally different from mine that I don't think I could ever date him (if I were single.) We are both too set in our ways to be persuaded to the other side. I have no problem being friends with someone who is repub, but there would be WAY too much fighting if I tried dating them.

Seriously, we would never lack for things to talk about. Just the mere fact that she is actually INTERESTED in politics would be enough to pique my interest!

76. I haven't dated any repukes-- |
|
If I knew they were repuke, I probably wouldn't date them b/c in most cases repukes have really different views than my own--but most gay people are DEMS so it's unlikely I would ever date a puke.

That came long, long after I dated him. We never even discussed politics that I can remember.
It's the only case I can think of where I've ever said, "thank GOD I didn't fuck him."

johnno was the object of desire of all the girls on the block, including my younger sister and i. of the half dozen or so in the race, i was dead last. hopeless. fast forward 10 years. i am divorced, cocktail waitressing at the country club. one of the regulars is johnno's dad, a judge-R. old fashioned R. decent guy, for an R. so, johnno and i get back in touch. go out, have dinner, have a few drinks. the more we talk, the more my stomach hurts, the more he starts wonder why he let me "get away, back then" life is full of close calls.

but I had no idea he was a Republican at first because everything he said was so damn liberal. Oddly, though, he considered himself a Republican. He had to be a one-issue voter, but I never did find out what that issue was.
