2. Just a guess...
... but I think a conniption is a bit more out of control. :)

4. They both mean to throw a tantrum
I've heard it speculated that hissy was a shortened form of hysterical.

Conniption fit means, a hysterical fit.

I guess we get hysterical so much we have to make up lots of words to describe it. ;)

9. Too true!
When I first moved here I wished there were such a thing as a pocket sized Texan to Californian translator. :D

Since then I've asked questions and can know now converse with the best of 'em.

6. Hissy fits are uncalled for, out of proportion reactions to minor irritants
Hissy fits are often immature outbursts, that are funny to those who observe them. Conniption fits are usually had by older people who are more justified in their rage at real (though often minor) irritants that come their way.

I threw a quite a few hissy fits as a young guy, but-as I matured-I've rarely had a conniption. On those rare occasions.....beware.

Thats how I would define it.

8. It's all about where they measure on the ol' Fit-o-meter
Hissy is somewhat less and conniption somewhat more than a shit fit.
John
As you'd know had you grown up with my crazy sister, Mary.

11. One man's view
A hissy fit involves pouting whining screaming, a conniption fit is one step up and involves all those things plus throwing things, breaking things, etc. What you actually do is less important than the extremity of your reaction to the situation. So it's a little mutable and open to interpretation.

But can anyone explain to me what "he threw a fit and fell in it" means?

Khash.

13. You need to clear a place out in the yard for either one of them.
As my grandma used to say. :)

14. Well, for one thing,
you "have" a conniption, but you "throw" a hissy-fit.
