Did Anyone See Whoopee Goldberg on HBO Saturday Night? |
|
Bertha and I laughed until our sides ached. She was fantastic! I especially enjoyed her comments on same-sex marriage.

I thought. I caught my husband getting a tad bit bored during all the womens stuff until I looked at him and said, "See? It isn't just me." He seemed to get it a little better after that. She has always made me laugh and she manages to make quite a point while she is doing it.

3. I loved the political segment of her show. |
|
The girl-stuff was amusing but as a guy I was a bit bored by it. She is a bright and funny Lady. Loved the show!

it is very nice the last 10 or 15 years, perhaps longer, to have women comics who talk about womens issues. The first one I remember who really seemed to touch where no one else had was Elaine Boosler. It has just gotten better since then.
Why does it seem that both sexes seem to enjoy male humor but the female comics talking about female issues bore the men? Maybe it is just certain female issues?

My dh was a little bored by that part too, I kept looking at him (laughing my ass off) and he was just mildly amused...I said, you have no idea do you? He just nodded. no comment though, he knew he'd get his ass chewed if he criticised it or tried to change the channel!

Whoopie is just fabulous at putting it in a frame to make it all funny. I don't know how old she is but I figure she is close to my age and when she started going off about walking with her new sanitary napkin I about fell off the couch, also the bit about getting into a girdle.

I love her. absofuckinglutelyloveher!
I got the feeling that she doesn't like Bush, did you infer that as well? maybe it was just me...
Ha!
I was a bit confused at the end, that character threw me. I didn't know where she was going to go with it, but it was quite good, great message.

when she was in the Fontaine character, talking about same-sex marriage, and she said, "y'all have scared the shit out of everyone!" God, I laughed so hard at that.
Whoopee is, IMO, a brave woman. She was heavily criticised for the remarks she made about Gee Dubya last year, but she didn't pull any punches during the HBO special.
If you didn't see it, make a point to catch the repeat performances on HBO. It was great!

9. about the character at the end |
|
Her original broadway show 20 years ago featured five characters: Fontaine (her character for the first half of this new show), Little Girl, Surfer Chick, Jamaican Woman, and Crippled Woman. Basically she did the same schtick as Crippled Woman this time as last time, but w/ a few modifications.
Not that this was bad but I liked the one 20 years ago much better.
If you can, try to find an old VHS tape of that show 20 years ago. I finally found one on Amazon.com. Used, but in good shape. I hope eventually they put it on DVD. It's called simply "Whoopi Goldberg Live on Broadway."
