Ace-the-cat has gone to the big litter box in the sky.

I knew I was a dog person from my earliest childhood memories.
I didn't know I was a cat person until my then six year old daughter said "I want a kitty."
Thus began our string of feline roomies.
Rusty, Mimi, E-e-e-e, and finally Ace The Wonder Cat.
Rusty was an orange tabby, hence the name.
Mimi and E-e-e-e named themselves.
That was the kind of meow sound they made.

I named Ace. He loomed up outside my kitchen sliding glass door late one night. I had snuck in there for some clandestine chocolate ice cream with melted peanut butter topping (try it!) after Miz t. was asleep. Mimi had shuffled off this mortal coil a few weeks before. I just "felt" like I was being watched there in the kitchen that night. I looked out the door and saw nothing but night. I looked down and saw these huge yellow eyes staring back at me.

Once my heart rate got back to close to normal, I opened the door a few inches. He was inside in a flash. Like greased lightning. Lord, that cat could move. He started head-butting and rubbing my ankles. He was purring so loud I was afraid he'd wake Miz t.
"Hey cat. How you doin'?"
"R-R-R-R-R-R-R"

He was as black as...as..."the Ace of Spades" came to mind.
OK, "Ace". It wasn't until I got to know him better that I found he had a small white patch on his tummy.

Well, we were catless. I folded up a blanket and put it in the garage. Put down a bowl of water and a can of Mimi's food. Decided I'd introduce him (he turned out to be a "him") to Miz t. and Nasha, our German Shepherd, in the morning.

As soon as he saw Nasha he did the same thing he'd done with me. Head-butting her legs, rubbing in-and-out, purring. Nasha had been OK with Mimi, so I guess she figured "OK, another cat."

The Wonder Cat?
1. If Ace had a trophy room it would contain birds (mostly blue-jays), frogs, skinks, geckos, snakes (including a pygmy rattler), and SQUIRRELS. Yeah, squirrels damn near as big as he was. Ace was a very talented and efficient hunter. It's what he did.
2. He LOVED dogs. Friends or strangers, he never ran from a dog. Maybe he had figured that out. If you don't run, they can't chase. He did the same head-butting, rubbing, purring with every dog he ever got close to. It really confused them. ;-)
3. He loved people too. Big people, little people, it didn't matter. Was just nuts about them. Litttle kids could pull his tail or ears and he'd just purr. This is the MOST sociable cat I've ever seen. He was special.
4. Ace contracted diabetes about 4 years ago. I gave him insulin shots morning and evening. Not only didn't he complain, he seemed to understand. If I wasn't up by 6 a.m. for the morning shot, he'd come get me. "Hey! Time for my shot! I can't have breakfast until my shot. Get a move on. I'm STARVING."

The old boy began to fail over the last few weeks. Age and the diabetes. We knew it was time, but it's still hard.
You were a damn good cat Ace. The best. we'll miss you.

4. Rest in peace, Ace
You've got me close to tears over some of my own lost furbabies in recent years. They really do get under your skin, don't they? If we could only get such beautiful, unconditional love from everyone we met, there would be--could be--no war, and only good things would result.

Alas and alack, only those who can see such a one as a cat or dog and treat them with the true love and affection they help to bring out in ourselves, can see that life is that much less worth living without them around.

I wish you luck with the next furbaby, and to let him or her find you, and not vice versa, like Ace obviously did because he had good taste. :)

11. Thanks. He leaves a big hole.
For the last 4 years our daily lives have pretty much revolved around his 6 a.m./6 p.m. injections. Now that he's gone, I feel like there's something I need to do. But I don't any more.

It's interesting how most people feel about needles. Especially using them. Luckily we have two neighborhood friends who are retired physicians and one who is a former Air Force medic. When we were out of town, they'd take care of Ace.

12. Ace chose you
You all must be very beloved by your feline and canine friends, because Ace chose you. It's very special when a cat chooses his or her people; we've been chosen by cats, too. (Our Merlin comes to mind, who's probably been greeting Ace at the Rainbow Bridge.)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm willing to bet, though, when the tears dry, there will be another feline waiting at your sliding glass door.

You'll have to let the feline in. Ace sent him.

14. Thanks for the release.
I was doing pretty good until I got to our vet.

My lot in our family has always been to be the "strong guy" who can take our pets in for euthanasia when they can't function any more. The "macho" thing, I guess, but I'm not, really.

Your post finally brought the tears and, I guess, the release I needed.
Miz t. too.
Thank you for that.

I'm always amazed at people who say, "Well, it was just an animal." No, they're members of the family.

24. Yeah those same insensitive bastards
probably don't have a problem with Frist using them for vivisection, either.

Oh...BTW, I guess those early experiments taught him all about how to contract AIDS thru sweat and tears, eh?

13. Thought you might like this
To Those I Love
And Those Who Love Me
(Author Unknown)

When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn't tie yourself to me in tears.
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess,
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love each of you has shown.
But now it's time I traveled on alone.
So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for awhile that we must part
So keep the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on.
So if you listen with your heart, you'll hear
All of my love around soft and clear.
And when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile, and say,
"Welcome Home"

Cats are the best, aren't they? I have four now and had six until 2 years ago when I lost the first of two cats over the last 2 years. Loss is hard, very hard, but know that it was the best thing to let Ace go. He is in a better place now and will be waiting for you to join him whenever that may be. He sounds like he was the best friend to you and a very special cat. When you are ready, you will let another "Ace" into your life.
