Poll question: "All brands of vodka taste the same." True or false? |
|
I've heard it a gazillion times. "All brands of vodka taste the same." A liquor store clerk said he'd heard glowing reports of a brand called "Potters." It says "Triple Distilled" and it's inexpensive. I just took a sip and it's smooth as silk!

I could drink Grey Goose instead of water...it's so smooth. There are other good brands as well. Last week I made myself a drink at my uncle's house using Smirnoff. It was fine to mix, but I did a little shot for shits and giggles, and I could barely choke that crap down, it burned so bad!!!

|
Because they've either 1)never had Grey Goose or Stoli or 2) didn't have the vodka cold enough. Warm vodka- which is an insult to the spirit- will taste less flavorful than ice cold premium vodka. But GOOD ice cold vodka doesn't burn- it is smooth, and very pleasent to have on the rocks. Smirnoff- :puke:

If you want a nice 5th of Vodka for about $12 try Smirnoff Silver (90.4 pf) or Luksusowa. You can usually find a handle of Luksusowa for about $24

7. No, it doesn't. There are "classes" based on price... |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 08:33 PM by Redstone
What you're getting for spending more money of vodka is smoothness:
A $12 bottle of vodka of any brand will be like drinking brake fluid.
A $26 bottle of vodka (Connecticut prices used for reference) of any brand will be reasonably smooth and not give you a headache unless you drink half a bottle in one night. (Finlandia fits in this class, and it'smy favorite.)
A $35 to $45 bottle of of vodka of any brand will be almost tasteless, have no burn if taken straight, and, like good rice, pick up the flavor of whatever you mix it with.
More than $45 for a bottle of vodka is wasted money. I defy anyone to honestly be able to tell the difference.

I was at a restaurant in Tampa one night, and after dinner, the bartender bought us all a glass of Johnnie Blue. Oh. My. Way out of my price range, but unbelievable.

of Ketel One, Grey Goose and Absolut, all served at exactly the same (ice cold) temperature. I thought they all tasted exactly the same. My wife and my friend had a definite preference--the Absolut (the cheapest of the three). We're all, shall I say, experienced vodka drinkers who've been sampling premium brands for years. Until the taste test, I was a dedicated Grey Goose drinker.

But doesn't serving any beverage "ice cold" tend to numb the taste buds? I would think that a better test of the flavor would be to serve samples no more than chilled.

65. Perfectly sensible question. |
|
And most likely true. But, thought I, since we mostly drink it ice cold in martinis and such, ice cold is the most sensible way to do a tasting. Could be if we'd tried them all at room temp, or slightly chilled, we'd have come to a completely different set of conclusions.

Polish vodka is the best, you know. ;-)
I'll drink Chopin if I want a sharper flavor, since it's a potato-based vodka. Belvedere's distilled from rye and has the best flavor I've found thus far.
BTW, I have had pretty much every vodka on the market, having worked as a bartender/server/manager in the food service industry for almost 20 years. Of course, I'll keep trying them to see if a better one comes along. :D

But I really like Ketel One too, which hasn't really been mentioned yet. Both make a good martini. For the price, Sky makes a DECENT martini, but it has to be good and dirty . . .
Cheap vodka is only good if you want to get drunk fast and mix it with sugary sweet fruit juice - and I've always felt it the next day, no matter how much.
Pearl vodka is pretty good too, but I wouldn't buy a bottle.
