Well last weekend myself and two of my friends and a guy we went to High School with (AF pilot now-flown in both Gulf wars) took a loop. I was told to bring my "A game" and ..... I did- 7 pars and I shot a 93 (two 8's in there and a 7 DAMN!). I did lose my magical club, a 6 iron I bent on a root years ago that was unbelievable around the green (low ball). I dropped it with another club on the side of the green (one of my 8's--it is always a bad sign when you are carrying more than the putter around near the green).
Well I am playing in the company charity tourney tomorrow. The organizer of it just asked me "You drink, right?" IS THE POPE DEAD?
Well not only do I get to play in the best ball tourney FREE and possibly win some really cool golf stuff in the raffle he is going to have Bloody Marys and Screwdrivers for everyone tomorrow morning.

8. The golf course is one of the last untamed areas of this country* |

trust me in the daylight (but especially after dark) you can see almost ANYTHING going on on a golfcourse. ;-) ANYTHING
*in some areas it DOES serve as a buffer, a mote if you will, around the rich.

13. There ARE advantages to having women on the course |
|
Not me personally but I have seen it and I have heard reliable stories about certain beer cart girls.
Aside from that lots of drinking and drugging going on...again I only know of this from reliable sources not directly.

6. Golf is such a great game |
|
I grew up next to a shabby, scruffy public course outside of Boston. Became friends with the youngest son of the pro, said pro promptly putting me to work behind the snack bar and on the maintennance crew as payment for having me underfoot. I wound up working there for ten years, doing everything - pro shop, snack bar, grounds crew, etc.
I also got to play every day for free. Golf teaches mental discipline, temper control, hand-to-eye coordination, patience, and when you carry your bag for 18 holes on a hot day, gives you a pretty good workout.
It saddens me greatly that it is an exclusive game, one that is hard to play regularly if you don't have money. A good set of clubs can run you $500 at a bare minimum, and the balls are $4 a pop, and to play a round at the most meager public course can be $40.

You were one of those guys???
I worked for a year at Kingsmill and it was a blast-we all carried a club with us in our kubota work vehicles...look around.....no one coming.....HHHWHACK!
The set of clubs I have originally were a DuPont set from Kmart $160. I had added some but $500 is bit on the high side. If you can play during weekdays (like a friend of mine can-shift work) AND you get a USGA or stateSGA card you can save lots of money.
Growing up next to a course must have been a hoot. I had no idear Will.

It's a shame it's so expensive to play (and of course is dominated by rich white Republicans). There's something Zen-like and relaxing about it.
