1. Today is
18 weeks since I quit.....

you can do it because you have a stronger will than I do!!!!!

get some Jolly Rancher hard candies to help you when the urges strike.....and don't worry, keep trying, you'll make it eventually.

2. Congratulations you guys!
I hope you do it!!

My mom calls me about once a month to tell me she quit smoking. I always say "great mom, how long ago did you quit?"

To which she replies.. "about 15 minutes ago" x(

Well.... at least she keeps trying.

It's tough to quit smoking, but you CAN do it!! It won't be long, and you seriously won't even think about it any more.

~ Keep it up! ~

3. The gum worked for me.
I ended up ignoring the instructions, chewed when I felt like it, and quit successfully. At an incredibly stressful period in my life, too.

Different things work for different people, though. I know someone who quit through hypnotism, and acupuncture worked for someone else. Don't give up, just keep trying different approaches until something works!

8. I hear that.
I quit on October 9th by using the gum and then quit nicotine all together on November 4th - Talk about stressful.

Unfortunately, I've started again :( I guess I need more gum.

4. I started getting heart problems when I was 27.
They're not sure if it was from smoking or not but it didn't help...so it really is worth it to quit as soon as you can because all that stuff might happen sooner than you think.

But then I did quit within a few months, and the problems are pretty much gone now!

26. Two things to think of right now...
1. Mentally picture a tobacco magnate sitting in his office. Here's a guy who's never done an honest day's work in his life and has made his fortune preying on children by getting them hooked on the most addictive drug on the planet. (Yeah, children. When's the last time someone in their 30's up and said "gee whiz, I think I'll start smoking"? Joe Camel is aimed at adults?) You don't want to smoke, it's this fucker who wants you to smoke and via nicotine he's tricked you into thinking you do by implanting the craving into your brain. Don't appease this pathetic worm by giving in.

(By the way, tobacco companies contribute heavily to the GOP. Wanna kick start the Frist '08 campaign? Buy a pack of smokes so that the asshole from the previous paragraph has some cash to donate.)

2. Mentally picture all the people you love. By quitting smoking, you're giving all of these people more of yourself by living longer and reducing the chances you spend your last years hooked up to an iron lung or something. That's about the best gift you could give 'em, and they'll appreciate it.

Quitting inhaling that evil shit is REALLY HARD, but you can do it, and it'll start getting easier in a few days.

Be cool.

:applause:

35. I'm with Telly on this one, it's one of the few justifiable
times that it is appropriate to hate.
The other really cool thing to do is get a focus.
Think of something really outside your buying power
(unless you're rich of course)... say a pair of shoes....
yeah shoes are good. Choose a pair that cost $xxx.xx
Then put the ciggy money in a jar somewhere safe.
Then blow it all on the chosen indulgence.
What d'ya reckon. Worth a try.

19. Nope..
havent had one since thursday. Asked hubby to quit with me and his response was "im going to the store and getting a carton". I called him an asshole and told him to be nice and not smoke around me. Did it work? NO.

I'm really putting an effort into it this time.. NOT going to go back to one..

What really is hard is driving.. I ALWAYS had a cig with me when I drove.

So you'll be used to not smoking?I don't drink,I gotta say that would be hard to do without smoking!I am concerned about being around my smoking friends, though.I'm waiting until a week or two goes by to see them.I'm hoping I'll feel more used to not smoking, and I wont light up one of theirs.

20. I'm on my third week.
I did cheat a little. Had a cig three days ago. I have patches, but they don't seem to do much. When I leave them off, it doesn't feel much different.

It's the worst when I'm finishing morning coffee.

38. I did that 21 years ago.
I did it cold turkey.
The first three days were hell.
The first three weeks were purgatory.

The thing that helped me the most was exercise. I was up on the iron range of MN at the time & just started walking out into the abandoned mines to get myself away from cigarettes. I ended up walking all day, and did the same thing the next day and the next. Turns out I did exactly the right thing by accident. The exercise caused my body to produce a lot of endorphins, helped clear the carbon monoxide out of my lungs, and proved to me right away that I was getting health benefits because I was immediately able to walk a lot further than I had been able to before quitting. Turns out that the carbon monoxide is a key. Smokers have their hemoglobin chronically crapped up with CO, and this costs your erythrocytes about 25% of their O2 carrying capacity. Within a few hours of your last cigarette, you start recovering from the chronic CO poisoning & you get a rush of energy. If you use this rush to produce endorphins (like a jogger's high), this will further reduce your craving for the cigs. This is because the endorphins are actually natural painkilling neurotransmitters that function very much like the opiates.

Another thing that helped me was to realize I didn't just have a smoking addiction. I also had a lot of little smoking habits--first cig in the morning, cig with coffee, cig with phone calls, cig when I got in my car, cig with newspaper or book, cig at typewriter, etc. and I had to break each of these separate habits individually, so I developed a strategy with each one. A tough one, by the way, was cig to keep my hands busy while talking to people.

I wish you all the best. Hang in there. I know it's tough, but it is absolutely worth every bit of the misery when you finally get free.

39. Here is how you do it.
You have to turn smoking into a ritual rather than "something you need". Smoking always used to be a ritual among Native American peoples and they didn't abuse it. They would smoke for a while and then they used a plant called mullein. They would either make a tea out of it or smoke it. It has a medicinal effect on the respiratory system and clears out the lungs. A lot of herbal cigarettes have mullein in them and you can find it health food stores. Native Americans saw the inherent danger of over consumption of tobacco. It was only when the Virginia Company of London discovered tobacco in 1607 that it became a commodity and people started abusing it.

If you get the crankies, come here and vent it out rather than doing it at your boss and coworkers.

I can take it. Vent at me. :)

You'll be over the hump soon - just keep that thought. You could try using some nicotine gum to get you through the roughest spots.
