"I'll Go Tally The Votes" |
|
That line drive me CRAZY each week during "Survivor".
Jeff Probst does NOT go "tally the votes". He he goes and GETS the votes - he tallies them right in front of the contestants.
Right????

He says "Tally" which means he looks at them (producer too probably) and they organize them for the most dramatic effect.

6. Have you ever noticed that when Jeff gives an update on the vote... |
|
...it's very very rarely focused on him. That's because he does not read the votes in the order that he pulls them out. They need to drive some suspense on it. So when he says "3 votes John, 2 Votes Jane" the camera will be showing reaction shots from the contestants in tribal council.

I've made a career of splitting hairs and making sure that what I write can only be taken one way.
Yes, he retrieves the votes. But he does not tally them until he is in front of the contestants. So it's incorrect for him to say that he'll go and tally them, because the tallying is not being done in a place he has to "go" to.

12. Oh, for brevity's sake! |
|
How far do you want to differentiate his actions?
"I am now going to walk over to where the votes were cast." "I am now going to pick up the urn." "I am now going to return to the spot where I first announced my intentions." "I am now going to open the urn" "I am now going to tally the votes"
-or-
"I am now going to tally the votes"
...which includes the implied actions of walking over to the spot where the votes were cast, picking up the urn, returning to the original spot, and opening the urn.
So, I will have to reaffirm that I find his statement more than adequate to both convey his meaning and justify his resultant actions necessary to complete the task of "tallying the votes."

If he said "I'll go get the votes", that would be an accurate portrayal of what he's doing.
ON EDIT: And to satisfy Squatch's quest for brevity, it's shorter than the inaccurate "I'll go tally the votes".

20. It Would Be More Accurate |
|
It's like that scene in "The Wizard of Oz" where Dorothy pours water on the witch and she disappears into a puddle saying "I'm melting". Technically, melting required the application of heat - since water was involved, she should REALLY be saying "I'm dissolving".

So ... which is a more accurate description of Jeff Probst's actions - does he "tally" the votes, or does he "get" them? I say he gets them.

While he may be tallying the votes in exotic locations, he does not tally them away from the contestants, which would be implied by the verg "go". What he does away from the contestants is fetch ir retrieve the votes, which are tallied in their presense.
And THAT is the most accurate description of Jeff Probst's actions, IMHO.

so that's why, after nearly an hour and not recieving any responses to your initial question, you had to drag it back up with "Any Takers?"
Failing that, and after a good disagreement (IMO), AND after it was apparent that this thread had run its course, you once again draaaaaag it back up, UNTIL somebody finally agrees with you.
Now that you've been vindicated (sic), shall we let this thoroughly trodden steed rest in horsie heaven?
