I think their taxes are due April 30. Or May 31. Something like that.

9. I used to file mine a few days late on purpose, just cuz I knew how |
|
swamped they'd be, that they couldn't possibly process them all instantly. Heck, they'd trickle in for a long time via the USPS. Now, a friend of mine whose dad works for the IRS sez they staple your envelope to your return, but I never got hassled for having an April 16 or 17 or 18 or 19 or even 20 on it, even when I owed money.

You were probably should have been fined for being late, but they simply don't have the time and manpower to check everything, even with an automated system and computers.
I'm sure there are people every year that get away with scamming uncle sam for thousands of dollars, yet they are never caught simply because they were lucky enough not to get selected for an audit. There are even right-wing nuts out there that have gone years without paying income taxes at all. They are free and clear for the same reason. It's gotten worse since Congress restricted IRS enforcement and collection efforts.
...not that I'm implying you should be lumped in with these people by any means, but it's the same system at work.
Law-abiding taxpayers feels smug when IRS enforcement is restricted, yet it's the ordinary, law-abiding tax payer that is screwed financially when tax cheats get away with underpaying. It isn't like a credit company whose collection efforts work towards fattening their bottom line. When people underpay taxes, they are simply increasing the national debt.
