2. Too much fluoride is bad for you
It turns your teeth hard, brittle and yellow. I used to work as a reporter on the New Mexico/Mexico border where massive amounts of natural fluoride is in the water. Everyone in that border town had horrible teeth.

where the water"..goes down the back of your throat like an oil slick..." according to my dad. They all had Very Yellow Teeth and died of cancer.
Of course, that could all be attributed to smoking, too.

5. But was that attributable to the flouride...
or to a lack of good and affordable dental care for the large number of poor people living on the border. Or both. (I say this as someone who spent a year working in the colonias on the Texas border)

8. It was definitely attributed to the fluoride
I wrote a bunch of articles about it.

What happened was the local school district told everybody they had bought a reverse osmosis water system for the local elementary school because it was a well-known problem. But ten years went by and the kids teeth were still bad. So I started investigating and it turned out, the district had never purchased a reverse osmosis system, but a water softener instead, which may have made the water taste better, but did nothing for the fluoride levels.

The EPA long ago determined that too much fluoride is not good for your teeth. And the problem affects only children whose teeth are still developing.

14. Most cities water falls far beneath what the EPA considers dangerous
In the case of the New Mexican border, there is a lot of fluoride in the ground water. And it's a very poor community of mostly Mexican immigrants so the government didn't really do much to ensure they had safe drinking water.

15. thanks
I lived in San Antonio during fluoridation debates and was amazed at how often the issue of naturally occurring fluoridation in ground water was brought into the discussion. Supporters tended to brush off any discussion of control of fluoride input - which makes it a different animal than fluoridation in ground water.

21. my town near the TX-NM border...
purposely had floride put into the water.

I do not have pearlies, but in the NE where I worked and lived for 8 years, my supervisor growing up had no fluoride in her tap water, and her dental bills were very expensive, despite dental care. As for me, I had just enough fluoride that I haven't had a lot of bad teeth. Not the prettiest, but they were strong, unlike my poor supervisor. Strong teeth or pearlies at a significant cost?

The reds put it in the water to control our brains! It's the greatest communist plot EVER.

That's why I only drink distilled rainwater and grain alcohol. I also never give up my essence.

7. You Can Get Fluoridosis
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 02:30 PM by ribofunk
from too much flouride. My father was an environmental heath engineer in industry (Burlington Textiles), and fluoridosis was one of the risks if you worked with that compound.

The belief that fluoride is bad for you is the similar to the belief that any chemical is a risk because enormous quantities of it cause cancer in rodents. It's a question of dosage -- the amount in drinking water is not likely to harm anyone, and it has proven dental benefits.

13. Possible connection to Crohn's disease.
Until the fluoridation of water, Crohn's was a relatively rare disease. As baby boomers and their children get older, Crohn's has become more prevalent. Yet, there are very few of the pre fluoridation with the ailment. Makes one kind of go hmmmmmm. My GI is doing research on possible connections. :hi:

20. Don't worry about it too much
Like many things, Fluoride is good for you in its proper dosage, and not so hot when overdone. This can be said about many things--for instance, fat soluble vitamins (A, E, etc) and even...water.

Point being, conspiracy theories re: fluoride are kind of silly.
