Poll question: Do you believe in "The One" |
|
No, not the Matrix or the Jet Li movie!
I mean do you believe that fate/God/etc. has one person in the world whom you are supposed to be with?

Mrs. B and I just clicked from the moment we met. We chatted online and on the phone several times before meeting in person, and I had no forethought in having a serious relationship with anybody. Even on our first date, neither of us have the jitters one has when meeting somebody for the first time. It was like getting reacquainted with an old friend. Everything just fell into place from there. I believe we were meant to be with each other.

I seriously doubt that any person has one other person in the whole world with whom they can live a blissful, connected life. There could be quite a few "the ones" out there for everybody.
That said, I've found someone who I believe is in fact "the one" for me, so I'm not at all inclined to search for any other "the one".
(Did that make sense?)

7. I think that's different from there being a fate determined "one" |
|
though. That's saying you've found someone who you're compatible enough with that your SO is "the one" for you, but not really the one ONE.
I'm talking more one person out of 6,000,000,000 that you were meant to be with.

21. No. I believe you missed my point. |
|
Granted, it was poorly worded.
I'm not saying that I've found someone who is "compatible enough". Not at all. I'd say that we are perfectly compatible (to the extent that that's possible).
My point was that there may be more than just ONE person out there in the big 'ol world who could, if circumstances were different, make me feel as happy, fulfilled, and alive in a relationship as my current partner does.
I plan on being with her for the rest of my life, and I say that with zero reservations.
That's a lot different than feeling like I've done "good enough".

8. What a depressing prospect that would be |
|
Wreckless Eric had a song called Whole Wide World about that. While he was looking in France for her, she was in a South Seas island looking for him. Then vice versa.
We all have a fairly narrow set of criteria, but in a world of billions of people, that adds up to millions of matches.
Me, I don't even have a real type. I think women tend to be much more specific in what they are looking for, as a rule. Just my observation. My exes range all over the map.

I'm polyamorous so that would be in direct conflict with what I know to be true for me. I have two partners. They are quite different but I wouldn't pick one over the other. I also know there may be others out there for me or for my partners (both of them have at least one other significant other). Maybe for others there is only one but not for me.

I've been in love several times, and if need be, will be in love again.
It's a very enjoyable emotion. Why restrict it to one other human on the planet?
I have PLENTY of love to go around!!!!!!!

I don't want to bias anything, but that's my exact feeling. I think it's *WAY* more romantic to choose to make each other "the one" than it is to have some dumbass fate dictate it for you and have you running around the world looking for it.
Anyway, just my feelings.

I could no more believe there is only one life partner for me out there than I could believe there is only one kind of tree, one kind of "true" religion, one kind of way to be sexual, or one human skin pigment.

Part of me thinks it would be nice for there to be SOMEONE out there who was meant for me. Another part knows that there are likely many people out there I could be happy with. And of course, the times I think I've met "the one"...something always gets in the way. *sigh*

If there were literally only one of 6 billion meant for you, that's a serious needle-in-a-haystack problem. You couldn't sort through that many people in a lifetime. Even taking into account that "the one" is likely to be close to home, that's a tall order.
The fact that there are as many contented couples in the world as there are, I think, shows that there are a number of possibilities for each person.
Also, the existence of someone who has found "the one" twice is a valid counterexample.
