My freeper sister is coming for the weekend... |
|
Anybody got a favorite mantra I could use when she starts spouting off about our "brave" president? We're much alike in that we both get emotional about politics, and if I kill her, I'll only have one sister left. Anybody have any coping strategies?

that due to your overuse of pain killers, your hearing is starting to go and she'll have to speak up.

Can you agree to not talk about politics for the weekend? |
|
That might be the sanest approach. If one of you starts up on it, the other can calmly reply, "Let's not go there." Neither of you is going to change the other one's mind, so why not just have a pleasant visit?

If you can talk politics without offending each other you may want to, but generally staying off it is a better idea. I love debating with my dad(he's moderate and I'm extreme, but he seems to love playing devil's advocate), but 90% of people don't keep their political debate separate from their personal lives, and that's what you need to be able to do to debate politics with friends or family who you so vehemently disagree with.

from the reserves, where he had been hooked up by his father to never have to face a combat situation or even go overseas. This is pretty much the epitome of cowardice, and is public record. Tell her she is just plain stupid.

I've tried ones like that before, and they're not bad starting points, but that argument certainly isn't invincible. I do my best to talk to the smart people on both sides(yes, they exist on both sides, the ones on the right are wrong but not dumb) and ignore the trolls on both sides(which can be hard sometimes, there's so many out there who hate everything I stand for), and the smart ones can at least make arguments like that a debate. There's very few silver bullets in the realm of ideas, so you'll always have to be on guard if the other person's not dumb. That doesn't stop you from winning, but it makes it harder.

10. Why did B*sh, along with his entire misadministration ( Powell |
|
is obviously just the window dressing he was always meant to be) skip service in Vietnam? Huh? Actively strove to stay out of combat, out of the country, and in most cases (Dickhead's 'other priorities') out of military service altogether. How frickin' brave is it to send others to do your dirty work?
After all the right-wing hand wringing and red quivering jowls over Bill Clinton's refusal to serve. Hey, at least the Big Dog had the courage of his convictions. He thought the war was wrong and refused to contribute to the bloodshed that led to 3 million Vietnamese deaths, to say nothing of 59,000 American deaths. Shrub, the Smirking Wonder-Chimp publically supported the war, and used his family's wealth and influence to get out of serving in it, like the yellow-bellied coward he is.
Will you even get that far in the arguement, I wonder?
If not, have Skittles kick her ass.

I was talking to a rabid, delusional chimp-lover. It only took her about two minutes to mention all the murders Clinton commited before she was off on a monologue about Bush's "leadership" and how awful it would have been had Al Gore been in office on September 11th. When I casually mentioned that he probably would have gotten off his ass and called a meeting with his nat'l security team rather than continuing with a second grade reading lesson, she got very pissed. I just love the canned response parroted by repugs which she employed yesterday: "What was he supposed to do - scare the little kids???" Um, yeah. Anyway, she just couldn't defend his behavior although she gave it a good try. This seems to be a sensitive issue among repugs and they still don't have a decent answer, so that might be an area to explore if she starts getting orgasmic over her prez and his courage, bravery, leadership, blah, blah, blah.

If your sister uses this term "brave" to describe the little monkey then I suggest that you do the following.
First ask her for examples of what bravery means.
I always thought that bravery was saving others, from a horrible fate, by risking their own life in the process or standing up for the little guy/gal. Running into a burning building to save a child, standing up to the schoolyard bully, exposing corruption at the threat of your own life...these are what I think of in terms of bravery. Outing a CIA agent and promising a full investigation, while laughing all the time, is not a shining example of bravery.
Here are some counter to what she may bring up at the dinner table:
1. He did nothing then he ran: Were was * when the first WTC tower was hit? Oh yes he was sitting in class listening to children read meter and verse from their assignments. It was much better to be there then act like the President and go into action and do something. But wait he did something he sat there for an extra 10-15 minutes and showed his bravery to the world by doing...nothing...while the other planes were hitting their targets. Bravery in action.
After that * was ecorted to AF1 and flown to various strongpoints of bravery in the U.S., but none of them seemed to be in Washington D.C.: they were hiding places. Very brave.
"I mean we were trying to get out of harms way", said the President when asked where he had been that day. Luckily for *, Karl Rove sent out some disinformation that the terrsts werelooking for chimpy's plane, and he had to be protected. That turned out to be a lie.
2. Do the brave lie so they can hurt others? 16 little words in the SOTU speech sent us off to a ill-gotton war for....WMD's, or was it to get Saddam, or was it to free the Eye-Wrackie people, or....well the list goes on. Take your pick.
3. Do the brave own up for their past mistakes...like going AWOL? For a Commander and Theif * is one of the most secretive Presidents that we have had in 30 years. If he opened up his service record to show where he was during the period in question of his alleged AWOL status then everybody could breathe a sigh of relief.
4. Is it brave to let others die when you can save their lives? Lets's face it. Eye-Wrack is about oil and controling the Middle East. *'s plan is to stablize the ME by force therefore insuring the oil still flows in U.S. dollars. It is also a great staging point for Syria and Iran. It is just too bad that the Iraqies and the rest of the ME don't see it that way. So is it brave to let U.S. servicement die for the chimp's conquests? Does your sister have any boys? Let her think about that.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I have an older brother who, at Thanksgiving last year, said that the U.S. is at WAR with evil...to the shock of his parents and others. If you let the words stand unchallenged then they give wieght to the speaker. I will not let any words go unchallenged this year even if it means having to show how uninformed I think he has become. Sometimes you have to say what you know is right even if it makes others angry. Now that's bravery.
