One of our DU friends has died.
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 09:28 AM by Skinner
You all may remember Robin Nixon (playahata1) Robin found out last year that she had cancer and posted about it here on DU. I corresponded with Robin because her PhD was from FSU (where I am a student) and she was having a terrible time finding a teaching position. The last time I heard from her she had been to an interview at Florida A& M here in Tallahassee and was very hopeful both about the job and her health. She had just finished her 6th round of chemo. I hadn't heard from her in a while and assumed that she had gotten a job elsewhere or was just busy.

Last night a mutual friend told me that Robin had died last November. She was 37. I looked up the obituary and she was listed as a Professor of English at Florida A&M so she finally did get the teaching job she so well deserved.

Robin always signed off on her e-mails with one word "Peace."

So, Peace, Robin.

I just thought you all might want to know; I feel terrible that I didn't know sooner.

112. Here is a link to Robin's obituary from the Tallahassee Democrat
http://www.legacy.com/tallahassee/LegacySubPage2.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=2802170

I usually don't like to jump in with a late post early in a thread, but in this case it looked appropriate. I remember her posts and her creative user name. Robin died the day after election day, November 3, 2004. She had indeed attained a position at FAMU, teaching the creative writing and fiction workshop. Peace.

Robin Nixon

Robin Nixon, Ph.D. Robin "Buffy" Nixon, Ph.D., 37, a professor of English at Florida A&M University, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, in Jacksonville. The service will be at 11 a.m. EST Thursday at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, 918 Ionia St., in Jacksonville, with the Rev. Anthony L. Willis Sr. officiating. Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. EST today at Holmes Glover Solomon Funeral Directors in Jacksonville (904-768-5215). She was a 1985 graduate of Paxon High School, received a bachelor's degree in 1989 from Jacksonville University and a master's degree in 1997 and a doctorate in 2002, both from Florida State University in Tallahassee. She attended Bethel AME Church in Tallahassee and taught the creative writing and fiction workshop course at FAMU.

"Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in the old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal-temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

My deepest and most sincere and profound thoughts, prayers, condolences and sympathies are extended to her family and to all those who knew her both online and in the real world. She always seemed like a wonderful, kind, caring and compassionate person and I immensely enjoyed reading her posts and contributions to this forum. I knew she was ill but I am profoundly saddened and grieved to learn that she is no longer among us –I will miss her presence greatly.

Perhaps her greatest legacy will be that she was able to touch and shape so many lives through her role as an educator and that she also touched the hearts and minds of so many people around the world who never knew her in person, but could attest to her wonderful character and generosity of spirit online.

I cannot even adequately express how shocked and saddened I am to hear this. I will miss her and once again my deepest and most profound thoughts, prayers, condolences and sympathies to all those who knew and loved her. I know she will be sadly missed by many.

I had noticed her absence a while back and had wondered then if she was busy or had left DU. I enjoyed her posts and felt she was a gentle soul with a great personal fortitude. Our community has lost a valuable member.

May all who loved her come soon to the healing point of being able to celebrate her life and her contributions to this world.

93. oh, no!
I'd missed hearing from her lately -- I'd also assumed that she was way busy with her work. Robin sent me a very kind message when I was stressed out about my PhD defense -- and was one of the first to congratulate me when I finally got my degree. (Unfortunately, I didn't think to save her messages before the DU mailboxes got reformatted.)

She was only a year older than I am now.

This is such tragic news. I am so sad to hear that she lost her battle with cancer. I knew that she was fighting it, but am ashamed to say that I had forgotten about her fight. Sometimes we get so busy that our online friends get lost in the shuffle. My condolences to her family.

I am so sad now. I am glad she got a teaching job-she was a beautiful soul.
