From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Kyu Sakamoto (Sakamoto Kyû), born Hisashi Oshima (Ôshima Hisashi, November 10, 1941 - August 12, 1985) was a popular Japanese singer.

He was born in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture. His most popular song, "Ue o muite aruko," was a hit in Japan and topped the Billboard pop charts in the United States in 1963 where it was called "Sukiyaki." In 1985, Sakamoto was killed in the crash of Japan Airlines flight 123.

I have NO idea which song was playing the day I was born, but I'm making a fair guess that it was either "Too Young" by Nat King Cole or "Because of You" by Tony Bennett. I know the top requested songs of that year, but I cannot find a week by week breakdown.

That said, here's to us 'Born in the 50s' folk! :toast:

62. Bad Girls - Donna Summer
Yikes. My UK one was way better: I Don't Like Mondays - The Boomtown Rats

The "Life Theme Song" at the 18th birthday was:
I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, to which I object strongly as my life theme song. This was number one in the States and in the UK.

It was knocked out of the position by "Secret Love" by Doris Day.

93. "Secret Love" was from the movie 'Calamity Jane'
Freddy Fender had a hit with a remake of it in the '70s.

I have a vague memory of Oh! My Pa-Pa.

105. "Love Me Do" by The Beatles -- 1964
Thank God it's a great song. I love music. :)

Using the Life Theme Song on your 18th birthday option: Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

Hey, wow. Paul McCartney is a big deal in my life I guess! Interesting. I bought a couple of Linda McCartney's frozen vegetarian dinners for the first time the other day (and Linda is also MY name).

I also used to be friends with one of Paul McCartney's ex-girlfriends on another message board. She wrote a book (around the 1970's I think) about their relationship called Body Count, which she sent a xeroxed copy of to me to read. It was reprinted a few years ago.

And ermm...Ebony and Ivory IS a rather significant theme in my life. I've read a lot of books by African-American authors, bell hooks being my favorite. I've read over a dozen of hers.

And...my best friend in high school was African-American. Her favorite group was The Beatles.

Wow, BamaLefty. This turned out to be incredibly interesting. Thanks for posting!
