Something like him shows up in most agrarian cultures, as the anthropomorphized spirit of growth and renewal. He's pretty close to Pan in the Graeco-Roman myth system, to Baldur in the Norse system, and there are probably more examples I can't think of offhand.
Terence McKenna says that if you take regular doses of psychedelics you may very well get to meet him and his ilk: apparently he gets to consult regularly with little green men who give him information that he couldn't possibly have acquired through normal channels, which nevertheless turns out to be absolutely correct. The little green men that arrive by UFO and contact people like John Trubee are similar phenomena. Need I mention that his divine attributes include fertility?
