1. check out the return policy |
|
I bought an anklet that broke right away and they wouldn't take it back, not even to repair it. That would have never happened at a local jeweler. It really depends on the vendor. I've bought lots of jewelry on line and the only problem I had was that one anklet. Again, check into the return policy.

2. depends upon what you are looking for |

most commercial stuff is mass produced and you can get good deals online. If you want something unusual or custom I would go through the jeweler or an art gallery.
Be sure to check out customer satisfaction and be informed if you plan on sending a lot of $$

lower quality diamonds. You also do not do as well at chain stores. If you are looking for a large diamond you might do ok (remember research). If you want quality visit some places that specialize in diamonds. Learn what to look for and compare, educate yourself on the different grades. I never spend more than 500.00 on anything that I have not researched first and I has saved me lots of $$ in the long run.

6. eBay has been good for us |
|
My husband bought my engagement ring on eBay - a vintage ring set with a pink garnet and two sapphires. After that ring was lost in a burglary, he bought me another vintage ring from the same dealer again through eBay.
Both rings were beautiful, the dealer was very helpful, the prices were very reasonable for us, and we were pleased with both transactions all the way round.
(We're not into diamonds - we like colored gems and vintage/estate pieces. I'd recommend caution if you're in the diamond market. Not that I know anything, I'm just suspicious that way.)

my husband's coworker bought a diamond engagment ring on line and it was a bad deal.
Lucky for him the place did have a return policy.
To make a long story short, he thought he was getting a good deal until he took it to the boss's jeweler who said it wasn't the quality stone it had been sold as online and it wasn't worth what he paid for it. The jeweler sold him a better ring for the same price and my hubby told me that when you saw them side by side you could tell that the online ring was a piece of shit.

and it is fine. Well, it actually could be a piece of crap, fake, who knows, certainly not me. However, it wasn't very expensive, and it does look nice.

There is a HORRENDOUS markup on jewelry in the store, partly because insurance is so expensive for jewelers. Like, double. It would be worth looking around some to find a source that doesn't have to carry all that overhead.
I'd buy it on a credit card, though, so you have protection of the credit card company.
