What "classic" pop/rock song do you just HATE?
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 02:35 PM by UdoKier
You know, the well-worn pop/rock song that STILL plays on the radio CONSTANTLY, the one that everyone seems to like but you?

Classic, only in the sense that the song still gets airplay years after it was on the charts. Most any overplayed song of any genre qualifies, but it usually takes a few years for the hatred to really sink in.

For me it's got to be Soft Cell's "Tainted Love". The dreariest, most awful, most over played song of all time.

"Summer Breeze" is a close runner-up.

Elton John

And songs:
"Layla"
"Born in the USA"
"Maggie"
"The Joker"
"Like a Rolling Stone"

78. As Jon Stewart Said of the Eagles...
From The Daily Show:

"As a Cardinal, Pope Benedict condemned rock music as evil, singling out Judas Priest, AC/DC, and The Eagles for criticism.

"To which the Devil responded, 'The Eagles? Do you really think I'm that much of a pussy?'"

Reptilicus---the Danish Godzilla flick.

I came across it on late night TV. I saw dudes wearing WWII British battledress and firing guns and cannon, so I thought it was a war flick. My mistake. But I watched it through...just like I did with many other atrocious movies.

There is one film I can recommend for your Hall of Shame---House of the Dead (2003), an incredibly bad film---nauseating even. Based on a Sega game, with bits of the game actually thrown in during action sequences. So bad that the guy at the ticket counter told me I should choose another film!

I've hated that song ever since high school. I feel as though I'm being taunted when I hear it still. Never got the appeal.

Oh, and "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd. One of the classic rock stations in my city used to have the horrible habit of playing that fucking song first thing in the morning when I was trying to motivate myself to wake up and go to work. WTF?!?!

I never really minded the song until a couple years ago. I swear to God the DJ would put it on within 5-10 minutes after I got up and turned on the radio. They must have a very limited playlist. Completely turned me off to the song and the radio station.

156. In 1995-6 in South Florida...
After the Howard Stern show ended, the "classic rock" station that aired it would start their programming with Barracuda. That first guitar lick will always make me angry. Not that Stern was good and I was mad his show was over, he was just background chatter. That F'ing song just got annoying after hearing the intro 5 days a week for 2 years.

I'm at work right now listening to the Best of CDs
The difference between the DLR and Hagar songs are night & day. Diamond Dave's vocals just mesh with the style of music better. Hagar seemed like he's desperately trying to prove himself to the old fans and constantly sounds fatigued. The old VH songwriting is much better! Much more aggressive, energetic, and a harder edge. Most of all Eddie's guitar playing was wonderfully revolutionary and awe inspiring back in the day. By the 90's he just stopped caring.

I also Saw DLR live twice. Awesome! Steve Vai can wipe up the floor with EVH

it's not his fault that Spin named him the Godfather of Inustrial music in 1992. I bow out of NIN because he recorded and produced all of Pretty Hate Machine in a motel room with a Mac, and that's an OLD Mac, a REALLY old Mac, and it still sounded better than most of the similar studio stuff (like from Waxx Traxx) at the time.

95. The original version of "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones is much better
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 02:46 PM by kwassa
here is a bit of bio on her:

http://www.mp3.com/gloria-jones/artists/14791/biography.html

When the name of Gloria Jones comes up in rocktalk, it's usually as a trivia question. Firstly, in the mid-'60s she recorded the original version of "Tainted Love," which was covered by Soft Cell for a huge international hit in 1982. She was also the girlfriend of British glam rocker Marc Bolan, in addition to singing and playing keyboards in his T. Rex band. Her considerable talent as as a soul singer gets lost in the shuffle, especially because few of her recordings are currently available.

Jones earns a spot in rock history on the merits of "Tainted Love" alone. This propulsive mid-'60s soul stomper, wholly dissimilar to Soft Cell's wimpy synth-pop cover, is one of the great '60s hits that never was.

(jump)

In 1974, Jones joined T. Rex (which by that time was fading rapidly) as a keyboardist and backing vocalist. Becoming romantically involved with the singer, she also helped sway him into a more soul/dance-oriented direction. Bolan in turn helped her out on her solo album Vixen, playing guitar and writing songs. After having a child, their time together came to a tragic end when Bolan was killed in a car accident in 1977, with Jones at the wheel. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

137. Funny "Hey Jude" story....
My brother (12 years older than me), was a heavy duty Beatles fan back in the day.

When I was 2, my dad got posted to Clark AFB in the Philippines, so my mom, brother and I had to go live with my grandmother down in the Rio Grande Valley for a year or so.

My mom's younger sister was still living at home with grandma too. She got SOOOOOOOO sick of my brother palying his 45 of "Hey Jude" over and over and over that she told me years later that she buried it out in the backyard!

He was confused for quite awhile; couldn't remember WHAT he had done with it! He lived with it for a little bit, then promptly when out and bought the album.

She was not amused.

139. The one that comes to mind first is..
"You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone. Boring and overplayed.

144. Well, I don't know if other people like this or not, but I can't stand
anything by Kansas, "Dust in the Wind" probably being the worst.

Otherwise, "Sweet Home Alabama" bugs me more than "Freebird" (though both are overplayed to a nauseating degree).

148. Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh.
It makes me want to stab an ice pick into my eardrum.

BTW, Joe Walsh was also once a member of The Eagles!

151. "Hot Legs" by Rod Stewart........
....When he released that turd, you knew it was over. He decided to be a sex symbol instead of a rock-n-roller.

154. Why would you listen to a station that plays things you hate?
Radio bites...unless it's XM...then it bites only slightly less due to the constant advertising of THEMSELVES when I already have the fucking service! There is nothing left except as many mp3s of your favorite stuff as memory can hold.

162. I will get flames for this one
But I never cared for Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You". The song is beautiful in tome, but I would have liked it by someone else.
