hey how do you guys feel about. . .
RW radio using the music of some really great classic liberal artists in their bumpers.

I think it sucks.

What. . .?

Rush uses Chrissie Hynde. . .? Now I'm torturing myself with Laura Ingraham only because there was this whole brewhaha about her breast cancer and the stupid things that people had posted here, which I didn't even read. I guess most thankfully Elizabeth Edwards chimed in but, come on people. This is not a private forum. Be mindful of what you post pulllease.

Anyway, she's playing, or her sub, or techie is playing John Hiatt, Peter Gabriel, and Springsteen. I can't imagine any of those guys approving. Should we bug the FCC incessantly. . .? Or won't it even matter?

Just bugs the heck out of me. How can they coop our fave classic artists with total impunity to infer there illustrious and totally disingenuous "coolness."

Ughhhhhhhh.

1. Doesn't bother me in the least.
The people listening to these shows don't listen to the lyrics anyway. Kind of like only reading books with lots of pictures, ya know?

20. You're damn right freepers don't listen to the lyrics
Reagan co-opting "Born in the U.S.A." has been mentioned, but a few years ago, I remember an AOL poll on the 4th of July asking "What's your favorite patriotic song?" and "Born in the U.S.A." was one the choices. Freepers still don't get it...

2. I find it ironic
But when you think about it, it's probably mostly liberals that make all the good music. They would be very limited if they wanted to find music that was appropriate for their show.

3. maybe I'm just being petty
but don't you think they should at least ask for permission or something.

It would be cool if they were left to play John Phillip Sousa marches and country western only. Don't ya think?

4. They pay for it.
All radio programs pay for the bumper music they use. The artist doesn't have a say, just the lable. Don't let it reflect on your opinion of the artist. They may not like it, but have to let it happen as part of the contract of catalogue.

5. Bugs the hell out of me
Rush playing Chrissie Hynde MUST be a sign of the apocolypse.
What next? O'Reilly using Bauhaus as an intro?

Really? Laura Ingraham playing the Archangel Gabriel? LOL! The end is near! Repent!

Khash.

6. She pretty much always uses Hiatt
who's considered a musician's songwriter. I think it's "Perfectly Good Guitar" but I haven't listened to her that much. He's very prolific and fairly obscure.

I remember seeing him at McCabe's Guitar Shop in LA and he told this funny story about when he decided to marry his wife. Her father wouldn't allow her to go out with a suede jacket with fringe on the sleeves. So she cleverly applied velcro. And affixed the fringe once she was out of the house.

Was really funny.

But hearing Salsbury Hill on her show tonight really bugged me.

Oh well what the Hell. . .Malloy's playing "Let it Be" now. It might be okay after all.

9. My solution is to never listen to or watch those asshats.
:D

I remember Bobby McFerrin told Bush the Elder to stop using "Don't Worry Be Happy". And didn't Springsteen object to Born In the USA being co-opted by Reagan?

15. well the McFerrin thing completely eluded me
there are most shamefully periods were I have been somewhat altogether distracted.

But if memory serves, Reagan tried to use "Born in the USA" as a rallying cry for the Right but they neglected to even bother listening to the lyrics. It was basically about the looming demise of the working class of America.

Ooooops. Never mind.

21. I wanna see
Chrissie Hynde beat the fuck outa Rush.

I doubt she'd do it, but, man, I'd love to see it.

Could we convince her to do an Old Testament thing with Chrissie as God and Rush as Satan? No?

Well we all have our dreams....

13. If they're paying the royalties,
there's nothing the FCC or anyone can do about it. It's called a "mechanical license."

Of course, if they're NOT paying royalties for the music they use...

16. yeah that
reeks of "entertainment law speak"

OMG I'm totally allergic to living in a litigious culture.

What about some simple common sense here folks? Shouldn't an artist have the right to approve or disapprove of the product they endorse regardless of their prior contractual agreements.

Sheesh. This crap drives me nuts.

17. Unfortunately, that's how US copyright law works. You have the right
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 10:20 PM by Redstone
to decide who gets to be the FIRST one to use your work. Until you allow SOMEONE to use it, nobody can.

After that, all bets are off. But you do get paid (except for thieving "file sharers").

It's really not that bad a system, though I can understand your annoyance.

14. they can't easily prevent them
If the radio network or station has a performance license with the performing rights organizations, it gets dicey for the artist to prevent them from playing it.

18. and as George Lucas said several years
ago (am paraphrasing) "shortly there will be no such thing as intellectual property."

Just can't stand the muse of creative thinkers being used as though it's completely emblematic of the propagandists.

Arghhhhh.

Worse than fingernails on a chalkboard or even worse. . .the sound of styrofoam touching skin.

e-gads & Ughhhh

19. I truly hate it to.
If the artist is high profile enough and takes a stand, the user will often stop using the music, but that individual usage is probably the largest single chunk of Chrissie Hynde's royalty income these days . . .

those RW asshats are putting money into the pockets of the liberal artists, and that's cool.
