Just wanted to let you know I found a new White Stripes album. It's not by them, necessarily, but it is their music. It's a string quartet tribute to the White Stripes. I picked it up at Tower Records yesterday.
Here's the playlist:
1. Seven Nation Army 2. Dead Leaves & The Dirty Ground 3. Hello Operator (a kick-ass song, BTW) 4. You're Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl) 5. Fell In Love With A Girl 6. We're Going To Be Friends 7. I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself 8. Screwdriver 9. Apple Blossom 10. Girl Blue, Boy Blue
The instruments involved are a chello, a violin, a viola and an electric string. It's performed by three people.
Not as good as the real thing, but it should be enough to tide any WS fan over until their next album comes out.
BTW, it's called "The String Quartet Tribute To The White Stripes" and has a picture of a guy with a bullseye for a head and arrows shooting at it.
Find it if you can.

1. Please tell me more about The White Stripes |
|
I've seen them referenced several times, but I've never heard any of their stuff. I'm an aging square in my mid-30's. :) What style of music do they play? Do they distinguish themselves in today's music scene? What do you like about 'em? Thanks.

I'd call them hard rock with a definite blues emphasis. Very well crafted and loud.
They are very listenable

4. I've heard them described as Jimmy Page and Robert Plant... |
|
..jamming with Moe Tucker from the Velvet Underground.
I think that's giving them too much credit. I find them to be highly overrated. That's from a punk/indie/garage rock fan in his mid-30's. In my 20 years of being a rabid music fan, I've heard better I've heard worse.

Jack White, who is the guitarist and singer (Meg White, his ex-wife, is the drummer and makes up the other half of the Stripes) is basically Plant and Page all by himself.
The band is one of those rarities that has radio come to it, instead of having them shop themselves to radio. Their sound isn't quite totally mainstream, but blast it in the car on the way home from work and you'll arrive at your house quite juiced.
The totally cool thing is, for three albums they made great music, great hard rock, without any bass guitar. They just incorporated some on their new album, with great effect.
IMO, they are the best of all the new garage rockers out there. And believe me, there are a ton out there right now.

and that's their sound. Very Sub-Pop; crunchy/fuzzy guitar, strained vocals. They kick ass!!

Maybe I'll sample some of their music, after getting the RIAA's permssion, of course.
Thanks for the brief education.
