Which sports teams will you NEVER cheer for????
For me, it's the Yankees. Even in 2001 when everyone was saying New York needed a lift after 9-11, I couldn't do it. Rationally, I saw their point, but I still couldn't cheer for the Yankees, even though I had no feelings about Arizona one way or another.

In football, it's the Raiders, no matter who they're playing. I also never cheer for the Cowboys. I used to like them until Jimmy Johnson took over.

Dallas Cowboys and the team that has to lose for Denver to move ahead in the division which right now is the Chiefs, in basketball definately the Knicks.

The Cowboys did the same to the 9ers.

Oh, and did you know the Cowboys are 5 and 2 in playoff games against the 9ers. But I seem to forget that 9er fans didn't start existing until 1981.

Not many could tell you. I can tell you one who was a damn good one, and his name was John Brodie. Never could get past the Cowboys though.

I forgot to mention that Dallas defeated the 9ers also in the 70 championship game, along with a divisional playoff game in 73.

5 and 2.

Edited on Sun Oct-26-03 10:23 AM by VermontDem2004
I didn't like the Bulls just because I am a Pacers fan, the Pacers and Bulls played in some close tough games, I remember when the Bulls went on to win (I think) it was their most recent championship, they beat the Pacers 4-3 in the Eastern Conference Championship, the Bulls won 4 games at home and the Pacers won 3 games at home, just to show you that home court advantage is not overrated.

beat BC the only time they met last year. Not any good, but good enough to beat BC. What does that make BC?

And to answer your question: "Hey, but is Holy Cross ever any good in anything?????" They seem to be pretty good at having their athletes actually graduate from the college. This alone distinguishes them from the lowly BC eagles.

Any bets on this year's men's basketball game? Before you commit anything, check out how many BC players have left the team and the school.

Go, Cross, Go!

Fuck them! Those disgusting bastards! It was on the list of teams I'd never root for. I guess I'll have to change my policy, in a contest between a team I hate, and one whose presence is barely noted, I guess I'd have to root for the team I barely notice, hence I would be rooting for the Sun Devils, or more probably I'd pay attention to something other than a game I don't give a fuck about. Maybe I'd spend the afternoon enjoying a bowel movement or something equally fascinating.

Hockey: I'm a die hard Devils fan (watched every game last season).

I hate and would never cheer for the Redskins, Cowboys and Eagles!!! I'm sure you understand why... I also share the dislike for the Raiders because of their fans. I used to go to sports bar and they took themselves too seriously. at least it's easy to mess with them. :-)

The teams in the western conference look good now.

The Devils are 2-3-2-0. It's a pretty poor start but they usually start like this.

They are playing well and that is what keeps me from bashing them now. :-)

36. All the "Winners"
The Yankees - I'm a Mets fan; if I remember correctly, the Mets did a lot more for NYC than the Yankees did, such as Shea being used for NY Emergency services.

The Dallas Cowboys & San Francisco 49ers. Especially since I am a long suffering Giants fan. My two biggest thrills in the 1980's / early 90's was when the G-men upset the Cowboys 38-35 in 1980, and when they beat the 49ers 15-12 in the NFC Championship.

Philadelphia Eagles. If I hear "Miracle at the Meadowlands" once more, I'll scream.

LA Lakers. 'Nuff said :-)

Chicago Bulls. Or any team that Michael Jordan plays for; don't get me wrong, I love to watch the guy on the court.

Colorado Avs / Phoenix Coyotes / Dallas Stars. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Quebec Nords, Winnepeg Jets and Minnesota North Stars.

I have the SI 1990 season tape. I watch the highlights... NFC final was the best! LT stripped the ball and gave Matt Bahr a chance to give us the win! That game marked the end of the Joe Montana era! Go Leonard Marshall!

47. Any baseball, hockey, basketball, or soccer team.
I'm not much of a sports fan. I don't dislike them, and have been to a couple of baseball games, but I don't really enjoy them either, so I don't cheer.

The exception to the rule for me is football. I guess because I saw quite a bit of live football as a kid...it's wired in. I don't cheer as much as most folks, but I still kinda follow it.

Now, I know why most folks don't cheer for the 'Boys; I fully understand. But since they are the team that introduced me to football, I still cheer. Sometimes.

The summer of 1971, we moved to Thousand Oaks and my mother's then boyfriend took us to see the cowboys scrimmaging in summer camp. We sat on the sidelines and watched for hours, as the boyfriend tried to explain the game to us. A man right behind us kept screaming, "Go, Charlie! Knock his balls off, Charlie!" (Charlie Waters) And other pithier remarks. My mother kept blushing and glancing at me to see if I was "noticing" the language. I was sold.

Then, that fall, a friend of the boyfriend had a huge party at his house to watch the 'boys play the rams...I was the only kid there. They were all sure that the rams would wipe them out. They all bet me a quarter. Every last one of them. I went home with 37 quarters. I was sold even further.

Later down the line, I married a rams fan. In those days, I can only remember one time that the boys lost to the rams...a freak billy waddy catch, and the rams went to the bowl that year.

I don't like Jerry Jones. I despised Jimmy Johnson. I haven't watched much, but have enjoyed watching Parcells bring back a little dignity.

So this year, I'm cheering for them again.

And the original question? I never, ever cheer for:

The Redskins
The Eagles
The Rams

Go figure.

Any team that plays free-wheeling, modeled after the NBA, no defense/structure, self-serving, 3-steps/double dribbling/carrying, can't-make-a-foul-shot-with-a-gun-to-their-heads thugball.

Soccer:
Argentina national
Korean national
Barcelona
Glasgow Celtic

NASCAR:
I hate the whole thing...it's not even real racing

I know there are a few more teams I'm forgetting, but you get the general idea...Now I know the next question: "Wow, blue tires, you hate EVERYONE! Who is it that you DO like???"

MLB:
Mets

A's

NFL:
Washington
K.C.
Green Bay
Pittsburgh, on occasion

For college football and basketball, i primarily pull for schools from Virginia, since that's where I'm from, and the University of Kansas, where I went to grad school...I do pull for other teams, but usually the fortunes of teams I pull for are somehow related to or playing against the teams listed above.

50. Dallas Cowboys rank first
I dislike everything about them.

Anybody playing the Buffalo Bills rank next. I generally root for NFL rustbelt teams over Sunbelt teams.

I used to like the Jets when I was younger but then Mark Gastineau came along and I started disliking them.

In college:

Oklahoma
Any of the Texas teams with the exception of the Aggies who I can tolerate

In horseracing:

The trainer D. Wayne Lukas. I always root against him.

Similarly, I always rooted against any team coached by Bobby Knight.

The Cowboys, The Packers, Da Bears, Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins, Chiefs, and the Cowboys;

The Yankees, The Dodgers. That is all.

The Lakers, the Celtics. The Sonics. Come to think of it, I don't wanna cheer the Blazers anymore either.

The Ducks.

When Michigan beat Purdue this weekend, they helped Michigan State by eliminating the tie at the top of the Big 10(11). I *still* couldn't bring myself to root for them.

Besides, they still whine about every time the Spartans have beaten them (not that there have been that many times in football<G>).

72. First and foremost
the New York Yankmes. The epitome of everything that's wrong with sports today.

The Denver Broncos. As a Raider fan, this is required. Same goes with the 49ers.

Between this triumverate, I hit the jackpot this weekend, getting to watch them all lose to underdogs. HAHAHAHA!

LA Lakers. See New York Yankmes.

Detroit Red Wings. See LA Lakers. These two latter teams and to a certain extent, the team from New York are generally on cruise control until the playoffs roll around.

College teams I will never root for include Stanford (Cal alum, duh) and Duke. I've followed UNC faithfully since 1977 when I fell in love with Phil Ford. Meeting him and getting a tour of the Dean Dome a few years ago was a thrill for me. I also despise Miami and USC, but can root for them if I must.

Is this a fairly new hatred--perhaps because of Shaq or Kobe? or is it a long-standing hatred?

It's growing because of their "we just want to win" allstar team they have this year.

Not that I dislike either, but Shaq rubs me the wrong way. He seems to get away with a lot of trash talk that other people wouldn't be able to.

125. It's not the team thinking it
It's the two stars that took massive pay cuts to create a team that is supposed to be prevented by the salary cap.

Hell can you imagine if the probowlers in football got to talking in the locker room and decided that money is cool but they all want a championship so they all agreed to earn the NFL min for one year to do so?

That's crap.

Hell I wish players on my team did that, I find it refreshing when a player cares more about winning a championship then having the league's best salary.

And front runner, you don't know half.

Been going to Cowboy games since 1962. I have laughed, cried, and been delighted at watching one of the most successful franchises in football history.

And I'm from Dallas, asshole. So are all Cowboy fans "frontrunners?" Who the hell should I root for?

Why the hell would I root for La or New York? All I care about is how my franchises do.

On edit - it's funny you don't mention who you follow. I guess it's easier to hate someone than to be a fan of a pathetic, hapless franchise that I'm sure the Cowboys have kicked in the ass on numerous occasions. Please respond, asshole.

I actually rooted for Yankees to beat them back in the 2000 World Series.

And I rooted for the Dodgers to beat them back in the 1988 NLCS (going way back).

If I choose those 2 teams, which I normally hate, over the Mets, then I must really hate the Mets.

119. The Boston Red Sox
They pretend to be this poor, put-upon team, yet their payroll is one of the highest in baseball. They try to win doing exactly the same thing those "evil" Yankees do, like hiring expensive free agents and trading away prospects for veteran players. They fire their managers despite usually finishing with good records. I wouldn't say I'd never root for them, but I certainly have no sympathy for them or their fans.

Jerry Jones is a GOPer. Tom Landry was part of the radical right. All of the players are on coke, while all other teams have choir boys.

And last, but not least, the Cowboys represent everything that is wrong with the south and Texas in general.

Yeah, assinine stuff like that which has been stated here at DU.

But the real reason - because they have kicked many of a teams' ass through the years.

Right-wing owners. Colangelo. Huizenga. McCombs. Jones. Spanos (a Repuke Pioneer!). Numerous others.

Righty/fundie players, notably Kurt Warner.

And, the kicker: righty cities/states where us DUers could get flipped the bird, or worse, for our bumper stickers. Now that Collie-4-knee-ya has gone to the dark side, that pretty much leaves, um, Seattle and (the last refuge) Toronto.

Now the Seahawks are in the midst of a swan dive -- to Warner's Rams! (yes I know he's not playing but he's still getting a fat check he can sign over to the fundies). Aaargh! What else could happen? Les Expos moving to Baghdad and winning it all, thus ruining a fourth straight year of baseball?!
