Camille Paglia: Cats are evil |
|
From Camille Paglia's "Sexual Personne":
Cats are prowlers, uncanny creatures of the night. Cruelty and play are one for them...They live by and for fear, practicing being scared or spooking humans by sudden rushings and ambushes. Cats dwell in the occult, that is, the "hidden"...the cat really is in league with chthonian nature, Christianity's mortal enemy...Compared to dogs, slavishly eager to please, cats are autocrats of naked self-interest. They are both amoral and immoral, consciously breaking rules. Their "evil" look at such times is no human projection: the cat may be the only animal who savors the perverse or reflects upon it.
Happy Halloween!

7. Paglia's a nutball of the highest order. |
|
And one of the biggest egomaniacs I have EVER encountered in my life.
She has forsaken scholarship to be controversial sheerly for the sake of being controversial. She is a parody, a joke, and an academic laughingstock.

"Black Conservatives": she's a mediocre intellect who knew she'd never make it doing straightforward scholarship, so she decided to forasake that for the attention-getting device of being a woman who disses women all the time. It's hard to do if you have a soul and/or a conscience, but for her type...it's easy money.
Ashcroft hates cats, also. Thinks they're marked by The Beast.

Name a better "intellect" on the left. I think, at least, the first two chapters of "Sexual Personne" are going to be read (and absorbed) for the next 100 years - unlike Halek's tripe.

15. Paglia has high amusement value and knows it. Academic dramaqueen. |
|
The feline qualities she's waxing poetic about come from all cat's hunting techniques. They are ambushers. So they operate independently instead of in packs like dogs and wolves. That describes Paglia to a 'T.'
Paglia reveres strength and independance more than anything so she really angers those who are dealing with any victimization dynamic. Like rape. Paglia has written "big deal. get over it. don't let it happen to you again." Nice, hunh? Not very amusing, that...

24. I enjoy my cats because they're decorative. |
|
I guess within the paradigm, my contract with the cats is about equal -- I expect that they will give me pleasure by providing a certain sinuous presence in my household. They do. They expect that I will provide food and a relatively clean place for them to shit. I do. We have an agreement.
I understand why some people don't like them. I just happen to enjoy their company for what it is. That's all there is to it here.

I ain't stupid enough to get sucked up in the whole 'BonsaiKitten' hoax -- people havin' strokes over it is one of the primary reasons I bailed on Usenet cat groups a few years ago! Anybody who didn't get that joke is too stupid for me.
I work with cats as a volunteer at an animal shelter. I know what they are, and I still like them -- but I know exactly what they are. I don't value them for anything they're not. They just happen to resonate on a certain frequency that pleases me, and I think that's enough.

She is quite insane and very literate, but she thinks her strong point is her way of looking at pop culture and politics--she is wrong. That stuff is fun to read at times, but I like when she writes about canonical artists with her strange eye.
There is an interview with her at Salon now where she says she will vote for Dean (though she does not like him) and that she voted for Nader.

ne·ol·o·gism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-l-jzm) n. A new word, expression, or usage. The creation or use of new words or senses. Psychology. The invention of new words regarded as a symptom of certain psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia. A word so invented. Theology. A new doctrine or a new interpretation of scripture.
I get the double/triple entendre here: Both of us doubt the epiphanic nature of my riming eponym. And I, for the record, emphatically deny any psychoitc orgin - maybe you were just using the word in the common sense.
port·man·teau ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pôrt-mnt, prt-, pôrtmn-t, prt-) n. pl. port·man·teaus or port·man·teaux (-tz, -tz) A large leather suitcase that opens into two hinged compartments.
What do you mean??
n 1: a word formed by joining two others
Ah-ha!: Will you marry me? I'll settle for the glissando...

That is if I were doing the defining. I would guess there is a woman out there who would enjoy some Dionysian physicality with you after you woo her with your Apollonian mind.
I am aware of schizophrenics inventions of language and "clanging." I used to collect writings of mentally Ill Patients for a study of poetry and text "appropriation" that I never finished.
As for Portmanteau, I did mean the 2nd definition. Etymology: Middle French portemanteau, from porter to carry + manteau mantle, from Latin mantellum -- more at PORT Date: 1579 1 : a large suitcase 2 : a word or morpheme whose form and meaning are derived from a blending of two or more distinct forms (as smog from smoke and fog)

was coined by Charles Lutwidge Dodson, better known as Lewis Carroll.
Neologism (literally "new word") is a 'fake' word; like 'medication' for medicine. A portmanteau word is two words combined in an unexpected way to form a new description, and I can't think of an example as I am ill.
