1st DU2 EXPLAIN YOUR SCREENNAME thread (newbies welcome)
Mine, as I've mentioned before, is supposed to be a joke on Cheney. Unfortunately, he came out of hiding about the same moment I chose the name. Oh well, too late to switch to disclosedlocation.

Again, this is particularly for people who haven't answered this question five times already, although of course everyone is welcome.

58. One blue sky = first three words of a Pete Seeger song . . .
MY RAINBOW RACE

Chorus:
One blue sky above us
One ocean lapping all our shore
One earth so green and round
Who could ask for more
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.

1. Some folks want to be like an ostrich,
Bury their heads in the sand.
Some hope that plastic dreams
Can unclench all those greedy hands.
Some hope to take the easy way:
Poisons, bombs. They think we need 'em.
Don't you know you can't kill all the unbelievers?
There's no shortcut to freedom.
(Repeat chorus)

2. Go tell, go tell all the little children.
Tell all the mothers and fathers too.
Now's our last chance to learn to share
What's been given to me and you.
(Repeat chorus one and a half times)

My son used to call me Mapster when he was about 12. I have no earthly idea where he came up with it. My other son and a friend of his used to go around adding "bert" to everyone's name so I was Mombert to him. Long before Dilbert.

10. The name
My username is that of the owner of Disney's Haunted Mansion, according to the legend made up over the years by Disney CMs and ride afficionados. There's a grave outside that reads:

MASTER GRACEY
Laid to rest
No mourning
please
at his
request
FAREWELL

The name on that tombstone was the nickname given to Yale Gracey, the Haunted Mansion's chief animatronics guru, who was also an animator on almost all the Goofy cartoons done in the '30s and '40s. Master Gracey is the name of the "ghost host" who's the ride's narrator, and his picture is the one that changes in the foyer right before you enter the stretching room.

30. Edgar Allan Poe
Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 09:03 PM by AnnabelLee
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea

And the 'Wonderful World of Brother Buzz' was one of my earliest memories of television. Another was Crusader Rabbit, a name I would have chosen, had Bush* not besmirched the name when he was tagged with 'crusader bunnypants'.

Actually, Brother Buzz is my alter ego and really I should be Mr. Pack Rat as he's more befitting of my true self. My brother stopped calling me Mr. Pack Rat and started calling me Brother Buzz the day he realised that I was taller and faster then he was...respect and sibling friendship happens in funny ways.

43. I spent a while not even posting here, just checking the News
Then I noticed you could post here and not be subjected to nihilistic attacks. I never had gone to any other forums like this before or even posted anything online. I saw all these people with various positions on this or that, and thought maybe they were only seeing their side or part of the debate. I was kind of jealous of these people that had all these sig lines and various advertisements that thought maybe they had to do something special to get them. I knew very little about the internet at the time ( I am putz, I know).

Now that I got it figured out a little bit, I am trying to stick to my original thesis. Really thou, my main reason for coming here is my discussed for * and him stealing my vote. That * dude is not the president, I am doing what I can to get him out of there.

I try not to get too stuck on supporting other things (but it happens), trying to keep on the main focus of getting * out of there is what I am about and keeping "nolabels" handle keeps me adaptable to that end.

Anyhow, when I had to pick a name, I wanted something catchy and amuzing and easy for me to remember, and that where my name came from.

gentle animals.

a poodle is more likely to bite you.

Wolves I trained appeared with Charlton Heston in "The Mountain Men" and were on the Grizzley Adams TV series.

In my wild and crazy biker days, I wrote "Wolf's Tales" by "Wolf-the-Loner"

Now just another old guy annoying total strangers on the internet by posting the truth as I see it.

Having been a Republican, before Barry Goldwater convinced me to change sides. (1993)
I know what they are capable of.

I was once part of that Web of Deceit
they train volunteers and PR company employees to overwhelm the media
to "make it look like there are more Republicans than there really are."

Usually a team of 3 infests a forum to argue for Bush on all topics.

IMHO

Clinton's administration proved that.

I once read somewhere (could well be right here on DU) about someone writing a book called "They Have A Word For It" and one of the excerpts talked about the word "Mokito". It is thought to be a Maori word meaning "A truth everybody knows, but nobody speaks".
That word stuck with me ever since, so I eventually chose it as my screenname for DU.

..was a half-baked Los Angeles gangster. True, he ran LA during the 30's and 40's, but he was a lesser power, forever bossed about by mobsters from New York and Chicago. Dragna was also never much good at getting rid of competing California mobsters. The name reflects my intentions in the world: I'd love to run things and be in the know about what's really going on, but I always end up beholden to the wishes of others.

The story has been retold through song for over a hundred years.

I don't really know why I picked it for a DU handle- it just popped into my head when I registered.

when I was a senior in HS, we had an exchange student who could not pronounce my nic-name (which sounds like peace only starting with a T).
It always ended up sounding like Ches-z when he said it. Then a bunch of us went to see Cuckoo's Nest for our english class, and a guy, who was infatuated with my Chest, decided that calling me Cheswick (suggested by the character name) was just the funniest thing he ever said.

I have no idea why that name came to mind when I was signing up here...no one had called me that in 20 years.

106. Madrone
Is my USUAL online name - for everything. The first moniker I've ever chosen, and suits me nicely. Dual meaning - a type of tree (and I am a tree lover), and the name of a character in a book I finished reading right around the first time I ever got online - The Fifth Sacred Thing, by Starhawk.

sooo -

When I finally decided to register with DU after 1 (or 2?) years of lurking and after they made it a site requiring registering to post the GOP had just gotten busted about that "subliminal" ad they were playing on TV that flashed "RATS" in a way that was not evident unless you were really looking for it.

I was so pissed off about that and so irritated by them turning a "rat" into a bad thing in much the same way they use "liberal" as a swear word that I decided to deviate from my standard handle and stand up as a PROUD DemocRAT!

To flesh the idea out a little more - 1; I have 4 (one died a couple of months ago) rats as pets. My first rats, but not my last! They are intelligent, cooperative, loving, and social - everything a Republican is NOT. So contrary to popular belief being equated with a RAT is not such a bad thing! 2; I AM a RAT by birth, according to the Chinese Zodiac. 1972, baybee! :)

So I figured fuck the GOP! Damn straight I'm a RAT. Not only that, I'm a PROUD RAT and a DEMOCRAT. The meshing of the 2 makes me a PROUD DemocRAT.

Sometimes I regret not using my regular handle, Madrone. It feels more comfortable to me, and being a PROUD RAT gets me a lot of DU grief about being a "freeper" :puke: - as if! Anyway, I've decided not to change it. Changing it would as far as I'm concerned let the GOP win - and I'm not willing to do that.

PROUD DemocRAT it is.

116. I have probably explained this before
but Rhiannon was the name of the best cat I will ever know. When my uncle died, his unpleasant wife got rid of all his animals. No one would take his cats, so I agreed to. She was just going to drop them at some shelter and I just couldn't stand the thought of this. I had known the other one, Angela, because she had belonged to my aunt, who had also died, but knew nothing about my ``bonus'' cat, except that ``it'' was friendly. What an understatement! When I opened her carrier, the most beautiful long-haired cat did this delicate little leap out. That very first day she made friends with both of my dogs. She came when she was called, would sit on any lap and didn't really need a carrier. She was so fearless, it scared me, especially since she was declawed.
:scared:

No one seemed to know her name, and that one seemed to suit her, especially since ``Rhiannon'' has long been a favorite of mine. It was perfect for her as she answered to it immediately.:D

When she first got sick, two years ago this month, my regular vet exhausted all his options. He knew I would do anything, so he sent me to a wonderful place which has so much on offer. They even gave her acupuncture, and the vet there said he could do things with her that he had never been able to do with a cat before. She was so good and would usually just fall asleep, despite the acupuncture needles. Even with all this, I lost her in September of 2001, at age seven. I still think of her so very often and still miss her.;(

When I registered with DU, ``Rhiannon'' was taken, so I just chose the first number that came to mind, the zip code of her terrific vet's. I have since looked up Rhiannon, since he/she is listed right next to me in the profiles. He/she apparently registered, but never came back, as there are zero posts listed.:grr:

123. Chovexani
Chovexani means "witch" in a few Romani dialects.

So chosen because, well, I'm a witch, and it's a nod to my Romani heritage.

126. There's a certain sci-fi book I'm cowriting...
...with a strong anti-American message, where there's a communist resistance fighting the Empire called the Red Eye. I am not a communist, nor is the book about the Red Eye mainly (it's mostly about another resistance), but I got stuck with the name because I didn't want to reveal my real name here, which was partly because there was a certain bitch I was hiding from.

128. Self Explanatory!
When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon.
Thomas Paine

When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary.
Thomas Paine

It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime.
Thomas Paine

But such is the irresistable nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants is the liberty of appearing.
Thomas Paine

Character is much easier kept than recovered.
Thomas Paine

From such beginnings of governments, what could be expected, but a continual system of war and extortion?
Thomas Paine

He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from opposition; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach himself.
Thomas Paine

If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately.
Thomas Paine

The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.
Thomas Paine

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.
Thomas Paine

If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.
Thomas Paine

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.
Thomas Paine

A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it a superficial appearance of being right.
Thomas Paine

Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property... Horrid mischief would ensue were deprived of the use of them.
Thomas Paine

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.
Thomas Paine

It is necessary to the happiness of man that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.
Thomas Paine

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.
Thomas Paine

Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.
Thomas Paine

The World is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion.
Thomas Paine

My mind is my own church.
Thomas Paine

Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.
Thomas Paine

The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is reason.
Thomas Paine

The whole religious complexion of the modern world is due to the absence from Jerusalem of a lunatic asylum.
Thomas Paine

There are two distinct classes of what are called thoughts: those that we produce in ourselves by reflection and the act of thinking and those that bolt into the mind of their own accord.
Thomas Paine

Time makes more converts than reason.
Thomas Paine

'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.
Thomas Paine

To say that any people are not fit for freedom, is to make poverty their choice, and to say they had rather be loaded with taxes than not.
Thomas Paine

Virtues are acquired through endeavor, Which rests wholly upon yourself. So, to praise others for their virtues Can but encourage one's own efforts.
Thomas Paine

War involves in its progress such a train of unforeseen and unsupposed circumstances that no human wisdom can calculate the end. It has but one thing certain, and that is to increase taxes.
Thomas Paine

We can only reason from what is; we can reason on actualities, but not on possibilities.
Thomas Paine

What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value.
Thomas Paine

135. It's is fairly simple
When I was in High School, I never really fit in to any of the mainstream social groups. I found an organization that re-enacted medevil fighting. In order to participate you had to come up with a name. While reading Beowolf, one part lists his ancestry. Withergyld was one of Beowolf's ancestors. I still use it all though I haven't been with the group for about 10 years, because it is so unique.
For those curuious as to the group I belonged here is a link. Don't forget to check out the pictures page.

the wingnut contingent called our peacenik contingent Saddam-lovers, traitors, and gawdallknowswhatelse.

So, I decided to wear the moniker Treasonous Bastard with pride.

Thought about registering a domain, but someone already had TreasonousBastards.com with a rant about Jane Fonda.

Shit!

I had twin brothers for neighbors, they always wanted to play *secret agent* ...one of them came up with the name 'dolo amber' for me as my spy name (although my name isn't even close to amber, it's diane )...I originally was using dariastwin (from the MTV show), which is a perfect nickname for me, but when the forums changed I couldn't get it back for whatever reason so my secret agent name came to mind...funny too, I hadn't thought of it in years. :D

143. Earl of Lade...
LadeJarl means Earl of Lade.

Lade is the name of the section in the town I was born in, Trondheim, Norway.

LadeJarl was a old viking title used from around 800 AD and up until around 1300 AD. The place was a very old Viking settlement initally and later grew to the 5th most important pilgrimage site in Europe. It was, in those days, the captial of Norway, the political and religious centre.

153. springsteeen song
From my favorite song, "Jungleland"

Well the Ranger's at a homecoming
In Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine
Over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sittin' on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking a warm beer in the soft, summer rain
The Rat pulls into town, rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance
And disappear down Flamingo Lane

Probably Springsteen's most beautiful song, IMO - with a great sax solo by Clarence Clemons.
