We don't talk much. But when we do manage to get together, it's usually a hoot and worthy of commentary. Bill was in Atlanta a few days ago so we meet to catch up on things over lunch. Bill was carrying a small leather bag - something that reminded me of those bags doctors would carry on house calls. So after some idle jibber-jabber I ask, "Bill, what's in the bag?"
B.O.: I've got something to show you. (smiles fiendishly)
Ozy: Do I get an introduction before you open the bag?
B.O.: Remember the fun Al Franken had telling the story about me and the Peabody award? The story that somehow was "misreported" as I really didn't win a Peabody?
Ozy: Yeah.
B.O.: This (gesturing to the bag) will make Al wiggle and stammer.
Ozy: You mean?
B.O.: Yes! Voila! (produces a Peabody trophy, glittering in the sunlight)
There it was: a Peabody award with the trophy's inscription clearly showing Bill O'Reilly
"The O'Reilly Factor" and the year 2004. (The latest awards were announced on April 7th of this year.) Color me shocked! Bill was glowing. I was speechless. And then...
Ozy: Bill. What's this?
B.O.: What?
Ozy: "Peabody" is misspelled. (Bill looks curiously at the trophy.) Look, you see - on your trophy - it's spelled "p"-"double-e"-"body".
B.O.: Sure it's just an oversight. I'll call UGA's j-school tomorrow.
As Bill was lowering his prize into the bag, I noticed a small inscription under the base:
"Love ya, Al F."
