1. First date with hubby...first found him in aisle 3 of the convenience |
|
store where he worked; I was there EVERY DAY from that moment on, hee hee! Spent 6 months getting to know each other with a counter between us...finally went out. Got a sitter, dropped my kids off, picked him up (his car in shop) and we went for beer/pool at the little muni on/off sale in the little blink-and-miss-it town I lived in. Picked up kids, went back to my place, listened to music and talked talked talked talked all night long, sexual tension so thick after all those months you could damn near SEE it *lol* So he stayed, for supper AND for breakfast, and here we are 20 years later...

A woman I was totally nuts for agreed to go with me to a concert... we drove to Cincinnati and had a great conversation on the way down, the restaurant was actually very good with a live guitarist playing, and the conversation continued... we went to the concert and Richard Thompson was the opener... she didn't know him, but enjoyed him. I thought he was great. The headliners were Crowded House, and she said she didn't know them, but about every other song she'd turn and say "I LOVE THIS SONG! This is them?" And I got to stand behind her with my arms around her waist and just rock to some of the greatest, most romantic music ever... the drive home, she was tired so she slept most of the way back... I liked that she felt at ease enough with me to do that, and it was nice just watching her. Got her home and walked her to her door, and got the most electrifying good night kiss of my life. Nothing dramatic, but just magical because it was her... and that was it. It was like something out of a PG-rated movie, but there was just something about her, and that night. Sigh...
Pretty tame by most people's standards, I know...

6. I went on a date in college w/ a nice guy from my Soc. class. |
|
We went bowling. Some guy comes running up to him about his roomate, and he needs to get home now! I went w/ him. His roomate had (finally) passed out, but had trashed their dorm room, beaten up a couple of dorm-mates, had puked ALL over, and had apparently soiled himself somewhere along the way. My date drug him into the bathroom, stripped off his (PHEW!!!) clothes, and threw him into the gym-style shower. He apologised to everyone. He was so nice and TOGETHER.
He was sooo nice - he apologised to me and asked a friend's (who was helping him deal w/ the scene) girlfriend to drive me home. We went out a few times after that. The chemistry wasn't there, but he is still one of the nicest guys I've ever known.
Believe it or not, it was a good date.

I was going to a local club to meet a blond russian woman I met at college. We had plans to meet at 10:00pm and do some dancing. She was going to look for me inside the club. I got in line to get in and met 2 women and a man in front of me and we struck up a conversation. My date was 2 hours late and in the meantime one of the women and I hit it off, and we've been married for 9 years now.

9. Hell, I've had so many dates over the years...... |
|
But the one I enjoyed the most was going to a late lunch with the wonderful woman I met by happenstance...
We just sat and talked, both of us older and wiser....
Neither was trying to impress the other, just getting to know each other and spend some time together....
That is all....
A wonderful date that I will cherish forever...
I think a time comes when the need for company and companionship overwhelms the youthful desire of sex.....
And then, the connection you make is very special indeed...

12. I met my significant other |
|
when I was 15 and she was 13. We dated off and on for several years, then she moved away. She came to visit a couple of times a year and we always got together when she came home. I moved away and whenever I planned to be home she would try to come. I got married, she got married, I got divorced, she was still married. I got married again, she got divorced. I got divorced, called her, and boom.....was like no time had passed at all. I was going to be in Atlanta for the week and invited her to come down and see me. She not only came, but came and stayed the entire week. We got about 3 hours of sleep a night and just spent an entire week getting to know each other again. It was like no time had passed at all....she was still 20 and I was still 23. We stayed at the Hilton in downtown Atlanta....I had fresh pink roses in the room every day, and we had a ball. Dressed to the hilt every night, ate nice dinners and went dancing most every night. Everyone in the hotel knew us from clinging to each other on the dance floor in the evenings and really went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. It was like a week long date....the best ever and the last ever...:)

18. I never really do dates but this was my fave |
|
It was in college. My first real boyfriend.
I had a 3 hour evening class and half way through we got a break. I went into the caf for a cig. My sorta friend Steve was there and asked if I needed a ride. (I didn't have a car.)
I said, yes and we left. In the car he asked where I wanted to go.
"Wherever you're going." "I'm going home." "That sounds good to me."
He took me home with him. A couple classes of wine, a pillow fight and he slung me over his shoulder and... I leave the rest as an exercise for the class....
6am (he had an early class) we showered and he dropped me off where I was living. I didn't have a key so I had to climb in through the doggy door. And found my landlady waiting...
"Where were you? Why didn't you call? I've been up all night worried sick!"
"I didn't think I needed to..."
"I'm not your landlady! I'm your fairy godmather and wicked stepmother all rolled into one! Don't ever do that to me again!"
Not exactly dinner and a movie, but still the greatest date I ever had. Funny you should bring the subject up.... I was thinking about that today and feeling all warm and fuzzy.....
Khash.

Lo these many year later, I still call her my wicked stepmother and she loves it.
We share books, heartaches, laughs. When I moved back to CA for grad school she let me live there rent free until I could find a job and an apartment.
You can find your true family under the strangest circumstances....

Actually, I have nothing to add. Dating has always escaped me. I usually (thankfully) find myself being friends with someone, then being romantically involved.

26. not mine, but a good story |
|
My grandfather's roommate sophomore year in college (Hahvaaad, of course) had a girlfriend at another school (obviously, this was 1935, after all, and few schools were co-educational) and his car was broken, so my grandfather drove him out to Wellesley to see his girl. When they got there, Joe asked his girlfriend if she had a friend to double with grandfather. So she talked her roommate into it. the summer after graduation, they were married. They remained together until grandmother died in 1996, and he didn't remarry (he died last winter)
on the other side, my other grandparents met on their way to study in Europe junior year (he went to Germany, she to France.) they were on the same ship over (1936) They had mutual friends since he was at Williams and she at Smith, but had never met. They met the first night, and we inseperable for the rest of the trip. He then wrote her a letter a day from Germany, and for the first half of senior year until she finally agreed to marry him. They were together until he died in 1994. She's still a swinging widow at 89.
By the way, the first grandfather worked for the second at a prep school. which is how my parents met in middle school. They, however, didn't get married until later, and only lasted 27 years.
