Are mothers meant to drive you nuts when you're my age |
|
I love my mom but she's driving me bonkers.
She called tonight to tell me my nephew broke his ankle. (He's fine it nothing that's debilitating). Then she's like "Why don't you call him and talk to him tonight". Now I adore my nieces and nephews and especially him and his brother & sister. But my nephew is just shy of 16 and we really don't hang out like we did when he was younger. (When I visit I'll take them to the movies or have game night and grandma's house). He's discovered girls and I don't blame him for wanting to hang out with his girlfriends and not with Aunt Lynne on a Saturday night.
So I told my mother I'd send him a get-well card and maybe a fun gift he'd might like (maybe a gift card to download some songs at Itune). But no, my mother gets all cranky and bent out of shape because I rejected the phone call thing (believe me, it would be 2 minutes long and even he would know grandma put me up to doing this - he's a great kid and really smart too).
So seriously, is this my fate for eternity!!! I love my mother but she drives me nuts (which pretty much sums up why I'm so anal retentive at times)

1. I would have said, "ok, I'll see what I can do" |
|
and then did what I decided to do in the first place. She's happy because she thinks you're doing what you're told & you'll come off much cooler with the kid for knowing what he REALLY would want.

2. Lynne, I can empathize. Not with my mom, but with hubby's. |
|
She was very, very controlling. It was hard to get her to get off a topic once she locked on to it. She was the queen of her way or the highway.
Very tough to deal with, especially as the DIL, let me tell you.
I think you totally did the right thing FWIW. He will really appreciate the gift card for downloading music.

3. My sister in law is old enough to be my mother and she says things like |
|
that. My husband and i were going to Az. some time back and she has a cousin that lives there that she hasn't seen in 20 years or talked to in at least 5 and she says "Why don't call cousin Maryanne, i bet she'd love it if you stayed with her" My husband told her no, he doesn't even know her and wouldn't impose on anyone like that and she says "Well she's family you know" ya family you haven't talked to in 5 years but we should go stay with her for week out of the blue.

Been there, done that....Douglas the World's Best Looking Nephew is now 24-

Mine would make a saint cuss and get violent. She tried my patience beyond what any human being should have to endure. The military could use her to break Al Qaeda members. She's been known to leave both my and my stepfather scratching our heads and looking totally perplexed.

8. Mine tells me what to wear, how to raise my kid, |
|
and what I've done to ruin my life.
At least she's given up all hope of me ever getting married now. I think she's finally thrown away all the wedding magazines and has deleted the menu for the wedding that she wanted me to have.

9. Yes, because it comes with the territory...at ANY age |
|
Sadly, I suppose my own two kids will think this about me one day.
Sigh... :eyes:
