A rhetorical question for all you flirtmasters in the Lounge tonight!
Let's say I have a friend who has a bit of a crush on a DUer here he/she doesn't know very well. My friend is usually very comfortable flirting and goofing around with most folks here, but this new person leaves him/her a bit tongue-tied.

Any advice for my friend?

Again, this is only a rhetorical, hypothetical, completely unrooted in reality type of question. Just wondering, that's all!

8. Uh huh. A friend.
I promise!

It's all hypothetical anyway. Not reality based. For real. Believe me. I kid you not. Why would I lie?

Then tears, then some coffee. Then maybe lunch, then a nap, then a sandwich, then some toast, then cheese, and then sleep.

If I had a friend in this situation, I'd tell him/her to crack open the first beer. Or whatever it might be he/she likes to drink on such occasions.

23. I feel the behavior of the other person
while on DU could certainly be an issue in this hypothetical situation.

What if, for example (and I think you are the perfect DUer to answer this one, darlin'!) - the person my friend finds intriguing is him/herself a flirtmaster of quite some prowess here?

That might just add to his/her confusion about how to get to know this person. Might it not?

What say you?

36. MAny times, and this is hypothetical, mind you,
A flirtmaster is disguising feelings he or she might have for someone by being flamboyant in his or her style while on the web....

But the minute there is a hint of something beyond a flirtatious post, that person may back away and find themselves confused that a flirtatious exchange may indeed be blossoming into something unexpected....

19. Several suggestions to get started. All worked on me :)
Strike up an innocent conversation in a thread -- make certain your friend learns something of the "victim's" interest and he/she should post something that the target will notice -- it worked on me. :)

Then your friend should do a search on the target and learn his/her interests, approximately age, where the person lives, etc. -- and start repeated threds guaranteed to catch the target's interest -- it worked on me. :)

After collecting as much information as possible, your friend should mention having some information that the target will be extremely interested in learning. But your friend cannot have the information with him/her at that very moment. It is something that will be revealed a bit later -- it worked FOR me (notice how this is different from above). :)

In my case, it was the name of a book that was of interest to the other person. And I sent it to him via PM. Thus began a long history of PMs and now talk for hours on end (we live in different cities and haven't been able to meet IRL yet for several excellent reasons -- jobs, care of elderly parents and lack of mobility as a result of both). One day... :D

It isn't easy, but it can work. Hope this isn't too damn confusing. Make certain your friend reads everything that the target writes...it helps. My response to the thread that got us started was totally innocent -- I had been intimidated by the poster's depth of knowledge for a while, thought he was interesting, and was happy to take the plunge.

In my case, it was Irish history. But we knew that already about each other. Your friend needs to learn about the target's interests...then the thing about book or whatever bit of info that needs to be communicated will become clear.

:D

And since he no longer posts here (left, not tombstoned, and still a donor after more than a year) he won't read this.

On edit: Please know that I am not a flirtmaster. But I have flirted successfully on DU. Maybe that is part of my success.

22. Seriously, if there were some sort of "flirting scale"
Then, on said 1-10 scale, he/she should drop a level 2 or 3. Easily played off if need be. Wait for response and escalation. Then self-escalate as desired.

24. Ok. This is good stuff.
So my hypothetical friend should play it very cool with the other DUer he/she hypothetically finds interesting, right?

Ok. I'm following your line of thinking. Let's say he/she hypothetically sees some mild response from this person in a thread he/she has posted. What then?

Man, all that time around those gentle cows has made you quite the sensitive man, flvegan. Thanks for the advice, darlin'!

38. What then?
How far did the response escalate?

Gotta feel that one out.

Maybe escalate 1 (one only!) level from there. He/she can always play it off like a playful response, in the spirit, etc. Let the other poster guide him/her, since he/she already knows how he/she feels. No sense alienating anyone in the process.

Example:
Let's say it were you and I, and your last statement was your playing it cool, so to speak. From that, I might post something like...

"Well thank you, and yes I do try to be sensitive, and understand things before being understood. Any good man would be sensitive in such a way. I'm very flattered that you'd take notice, as having seen you around here quite a bit, and noting that you took special notice of my picture in the last "post a photo" thread, I must say, I'm a little red-face. Blushing, even."

See...I've laid the groundwork that I'm certainly interested in drawing out your opinion. Why? Because my interest was already there, but is now escalated...

45. Your friend's got it bad.
When your self-assuredness gives way to a blathering "a-buh, a-buh" in the presence of a particular person, it's a sure sign that you're smitten, and therefore doomed.

Your friend should just plight his or her troth to the object of his or her affections, and live with the consequenses, come what may.

Sometimes you have to put it all on one roll of the dice.

47. I did. I told a woman to leave everything she owned in California,
and go to the American Airlines counter at the San Jose airport, where there would be a one-way ticket to Connecticut waiting for her. (I should mention that I spent the last (really) $600 I had to my name on this ticket, then drove nonstop from Philadelphia to Hartford to pick her up.)

Fifteen years later, here we still are, stronger together than ever.

Like I said, sometimes you have to bet it all on one roll of the dice.

49. oh dear....
That sounds like a deliciously exciting situation... those shake-inducing rumblings of a crush...traumatic and wonderful all at once. :)

Perhaps a PM along of the lines of, "Hey, when you said XYZ in yer post, I thought that was funny/sad/silly/etc. Made me think of the time when...."

That should get the chat rolling in a pleasant way. :)

62. Has the hypothetical friend had any thread banter....
with the hypothetical crush? Because my idea might be more of an icebreaker PM. But that would still work, because it would provide a nice transition from thread banter to PM banter. Unless said hypothetical friend and said hypothetical crush already had a touch of PM banter..... then hypothetical friend should turn it up a notch. Then maybe a compliment is in order. Something along the lines of "you're really funny/nice/charming/easy on the eyes/etc."

I like to solve hypothetical dilemmas. :D

Even though this is all supposed to be hypothetical, it's attracting all of this speculation. With over 78,000 people on this site, this situation could easily be real.
There's the voyeuristic aspect, and the idea that some people here think it's about their own experience.
This is a cross between William Gibson and Dear Abby.

98. I used to be an excellent flirtmaster.
My tips:

1. Don't flirt with everyone. Flirt with a few select people you really like (or just perhaps the object of your affections directly).

2. DOn't be afraid to be silly. A sense of humor goes a long way.

Other than that, just relax and realize that generally, human beings want to connect with other people. Life is too short not to go after what you want. You don't always get it, but I've never regretted trying. :)

I think you are STILL an excellent flirtmaster, Sarahbelle!

169. Yes, they both do, as a matter of fact...
Or, er, they WOULD, if they existed outside this whole hypothetical scenario, that is!

Did your, er, "friend" make any moves? Do we get to find out who the parties in question are? Is he/she still tongue tied?

154. 9 times out of 10, any post that suggest something is "hypothetical"
It ain't.

Your "friend" should take off the kid gloves and go out there and wrangle her the fella she's interested in.

Uh, I mean, wrangle him/her the fella/lady he/she is interested in.

155. Ecstacy.
Just kidding! Kinda. Well, I've got quite the reputation as a flirt....I say do a little research on the object of affection. What do they like? Music, hobbies, etc. Learn a little bit about what they like, then start a conversation on said subject. Tell them you don't know that much about the subject, but would like to know more! The person should spout off about subjects they like and are familiar with.
The catch is, you should be somewhat interested in the subject, or at least be interested in just how much it means to the person.
