How do I tell my wingnut physical therapist I don't want to watch Faux
News while I'm doing my exercises?

He wasn't there yesterday and when the O'Lielly Factor came on, I finally spoke up and said, "Jesus Christ, I can't stand that bastard." The fundy therapist who was subbing probably didn't appreciate my language very much, but it just erupted from me before I knew what I was saying. (The substitute therapist has a nephew graduating from my alma mater and I'm sure he assumed I am a Christian.)

The lone liberal contingent of the therapists hinted that she and my wingnut therapist don't get along and that he calls CNN the "Communist News Network." I asked her how she could stand having Faux on all day and she just shrugged and said that the wingnut therapist was "in charge" of politics.

I really don't want to get drawn into a debate. Also, I'm SO DAMN FRUSTRATED that I can't go anywhere in this county without get drawn into some kind of right-wing pissing contest. Damn it! I'm so tired of feeling like I have to barricade myself in my apartment for a little peace of mind.

1. Complain to corporate
Go over the person's head. "I don't appreciate being subjected to political propaganda while going through rehabilitation"

3. What gets me
is the fact that in the workplace or at home those of us on the Left are expected to accept the wishes of fools like this without a word of opposition. Try having a bush loving dentist who loves talking politics with his hands in your mouth. asshole.

4. Just ask them to turn the channel! But
there is no use in using bad language. If you want them to respect your wishes, you'll have to respect theirs. If they refuse to turn the channel and it means THAT much to you, then switch P.T.'s!

:)

18. Yeah, I shouldn't have said it how I said it, but it came out before I
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 01:39 PM by Ladyhawk
got a handle on my emotions. I was already pissed from being subjected to Faux News three times during "therapy."

I consider "bad" language any language designed to hurt someone else and honestly, I didn't want to hurt anyone. No language is "bad" in and of itself, but I also understand that there's a time and a place for such language and this wasn't it. My bad.

Also, I don't have much of choice of physical therapists because they have to accept Medi-Cal (poor folks' insurance).

22. Well, surely they will respect what you don't want
to watch. A lot of people would be offended by Fox news. :hi:

5. If You're Private-paying, Go Somewhere Else & Tell These Why
If your insurance is paying, tell your doctor you want to choose a different provider and tell him WHY, that you resent having whatever point of view IMPOSED on you. Same answer either way. If you are a patient, you have a choice of providers.

6. Find out what non-political show is on while you're there and ask to watch
it. Tell them it's your favorite.

8. Just say that...
Fox News induces an unpleasant state of stress that probably isn't really conducive to a beneficial physical therapy session.

9. Just ask them.
Tell them that you want to watch something positive and upbeat instead of the news during your PT time.
Best line to use: "I'd love to feel like a kid again. Let's watch cartoons today to cheer us up."
Few people will turn that down(unless they have kids at home that watch them nonstop).

11. Just say all the news lately has been stressing you out
and hindering your recovery, and could he please turn off the TV or turn it to a non-news channel.

12. Ask him if he can put on a REAL news station
yeah, I know... that's a debate starter.

Maybe you should ask if you can have music instead of news.... music to do your exercises to.

19. They only have CMT...ugh.
It's the only genre I really don't like. :D

I did ask them to change the channel and I was told my choices were Country Music Television or ESPN. Joy.

13. They used to have CNN on in the Star Wars Bar where I get
my prescriptions filled. Thank whoever they got rid of the TV altogether. It was more fucked up noise in a public health hospital's pharmacy that was totally unnecessary.

14. Ask them to please change the channel to the Cartoon Network
because you need to catch up on what SpongeBob is up to these days, and you've missed several crucial episodes.

15. Just tell them you appreciate no TV during your therapy
I mean geez, why is the fricking TV on in the first place when you get your therapy? I don't think you need to justify why - it's your time; you're paying for it - ask them to please turn off the TV during your therapy.

16. Why not just ask to turn it OFF.
Say it interferes with your concentration on your exercises and defeats the purpose of you being there.

"patient", you have the right to tell them that you either want the channel changed or the TV turned off while you are there.

tell them that it makes you tense and that you can make more progress if you are relaxed.

21. The only issue is that there are other people there.
One of the reasons I got so worked up last night was that there was only one other guy there besides the therapists and I was already sick of being subjected to Faux three times. When O'LIElly came on, it was the last straw. I had to hear him go on about how evil the ACLU is when it would probably even cover his ass.

24. That's okay. You have every right to some peace during your
rehab session. It doesn't matter how many people are there. You have as much right as they do to a stress-free environment. Who knows, maybe most of them would rather not have it on either. Why not some music? Or nothing at all?

23. I'd Insist! In Fact, A Quick Story
My wife and i frequent a mexican cuisine restaurant in a nearby town. We go there a lot and the whole staff and ownership treats us very nicely.

Well, they've got this outdoor patio (screened in to keep bugs of the food) and we were out there a few weeks ago. Just me, my wife and another couple at a different table. Faux News is on the TV out there. So, i just picked up the remote and changed the channel to CNN or MSNBC. (I forget which.) It was mostly Rita coverage.

About three minutes later, the manager/part owner comes out and picks up the remote and sets it on our table and says "Here Senor, put on whatever you want." I told him i already changed it because i don't do Faux News. He laughed and said "Me neither, really."

So, next time we go there (about 10 days later), he tells the busboy to get me the remote so i can put the TV on. He says "Don't just turn it on, Faux News might be on that channel, and he wouldn't be pleased!" We both laughed.

So, the message was sent, no hard feelings, and i don't have to watch Faux at my favorite Mexican joint.
The Professor
