How does a person clean and iron ties without destroying them?
I washed mine on delicate and they were torn to shreads. I ironed one and burned a hole in it. I'm new to the world of ties.

1. They're silk! They have to be dry-cleaned.

3. Well, there's always redneck drycleaning
You hang it out the car window for a couple of days.

5. Damp-press.
Take a slightly damp washcloth and press down on the tie, smoothing all wrinkles. It does help.

8. My personal experience..
... with silk ties is that even if you get them dry-cleaned, which is the suggested method for cleaning, they will never be the same.

Fortunately, I have few occassions to wear a tie, but when I did, I learned to really try hard not to get them dirty :)

11. Gently hand wash with a mild dishwashing soap and cool water.
Gently press it flat between towels - don't wring! Hang up to dry, if wrinkled, try hanging in the bathroom when you shower - the steam should take the wrinkles out. If not, use a hand steamer. The iron will leave marks.

12. The question then becomes, why do you wear a noose around your neck
for the sake of fashion?

Especially a fashion dating back centuries?

heh heh

Come on, what IS the purpose of a men's necktie?

18. I handwash mine in the sink with lukewarm water
Let them dry by hanging them on a towel rack, and ironing them on the silk setting on a steam iron, but putting a towel or bedsheet on top of the tie. Usually, I turn the iron to the hottest setting for maximum effect on top of a terrycloth towel.

19. Honestly, I wash and iron mine all the time with few problems.
Wash on delicate, and use the "silk" setting on your iron. Maybe your washer's the problem.

20. Wash in woolite in the sink..you can use a spot cleaner like
spray and wash if there are stains. When ironing set heat to high but place tie under a towel or wash cloth and use steam

22. Get one of those dry cleaning gizmos from the store.
I think it is called "dryel". Has a cleaning fluid and is then tossed in a special bag in the dryer for all your dry cleaning needs without being taken to the cleaners.

But I don't wear ties. They are phallic symbols.
