That has to be the one group I really outgrew.
I have zero interest in them now.
I still love all my other 80s bands, though.

I remember how much fun and excitement they brought into my young teen-age life. I have *all* their albums and 12" singles up to about 1990. That's a lot of vinyl! I never play them anymore, but it's fun to get them out and look at them. (Their art-design was always top-notch).

I was twenty when Exile came out. When I was sixteen, it was 'Beggars Banquet'. 'Sympathy For The Devil' was an amazing daily soundtrack for a 16 year old. The entire album refined my musical tastes and it set a very high bar for what I listened to.

Today, I'd say my favorite 1985 record would be "What Does Anything Mean? Basically..." by the Chameleons. Incredible album by an incredibly under-rated band.

Favorite CD? I'd say that year, Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth.
Even then, I had many albums I loved. I was still into Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Paula Abdul, and Wilson Phillips. Now, I'm not as much into Debbie except for Electric Youth, and I'm not interested in Wilson Phillips anymore. It's not that I dislike Wilson Phillips' sound - some of my current CDs aren't far off - I just think their harmonies were lacking. And the arrangements a bit syrupy. Not into Paula or Tiffany's old stuff now, either. Simon and Garfunkel, Sheena Easton, Cyndi Lauper, The Beatles and the Cars were big, too - and I still love all of them.

"Fables of the Reconstruction" - R.E.M. "Bad Moon Rising" - Sonic Youth "Rain Dogs" - Tom Waits
some Husker Du and Robyn Hitchcock, a little goth stuff like Siouxsie and Sisters of Mercy. I loved that Love & Rockets song "Haunted When the Minutes Drag" (still do!)
that was about all I listened to that year that actually came out that year. Even more I listened to "The Velvet Underground & Nico" which came out in 1967, "Marquee Moon" by Television, (1978), and "Horses" by Patti Smith (1975) and "Secret Treaties" by Blue Oyster Cult (1974), and a whole bunch of stuff by John Cale and Lou Reed and Brian Eno and Iggy Pop from the early 70s.
(I'd stopped listening to pop radio when I was 12 or 13 because I liked heavy metal and classic rock better then)

My favourite album was probably an old LP of "Commoners Crown" by Steeleye Span, a 60s/70s Folk Rock band, but I think it was out of print quite some time before then.

73. Back in '64, singles ruled. |
|
Brit invasion: Beatles & Stones, of course. Plus the Kinks "You Really Got Me" & the Animals "House of the Risin' Sun"
Surf Music: Beach Boys, "I Get Around" & others. Jan & Dean had "Dead Man's Curve" (alas)
Motown & other R&B: Martha & the Vandellas, "Dancin' in the Street"
Girl Groups: The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack"
As an aspiring beatnik chick, I loved Dylan's "Freewheelin' Bob Dylan." The Holy Modal Rounders 1st LP was released that year, but I think I bought it in 1965; nonetheless, I was greatly influenced...
I officially preferred the Stones & my sister officially preferred the Beatles; that way, we could have LP's of both bands in the house.

81. 1985, but I didn't listen to squat. |

Seriously. When I wasn't hanging out at school practicing for speech tournaments, I was rehearsing for a play, and when I wasn't doing that, I was at home with my nose buried in a novel avoiding whatever real homework I may have had.
I grew up in w/ no MTV in a cable-less household. I had no exposure to contemporary music. I was just beginning to discover alt radio (KEYX - The Key!), and I listened to what my friends and my brother made me listen to. Talking Heads, INXS, Adam Ant, Bronski Beat, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, U2, Prince, Black Flag, Social D, OMD (OMG).
To this day, I am still that malleable, but I am still completely uninfluenced by television.
