The Astros are not Tom Delay, George Bush Sr. or Jr.
Well here we go again, with the Astros in the World Series (OMG that was fun to write, I think I'll do it again. Astros in the World Series.) we all will have to suffer the onslaught of members venting their spleens on us. Whilst I easily understand most folks distaste for all things Texas, it is non the less hard to take the steady drum beat for days on end.

I encourage us all to try and be good ambassadors for our state, to point out we are not Tom Delay, George Bush Sr. or Jr. and their hatred for them is misplaced on us. That it is unfair to lump us into the stereotypical glazed eyed fanatical Christian conservative hypocritical piece-of-shit republicans that have hijacked our state's government by trickery in redistricting.

Lets all stand, shoulder to shoulder, with arms akimbo, during this time of celebration for our beloved Astros and those who would use this excuse to rob us of this moment of rare glory.

1. Sorry, I can't cheer for the Astros
Many of us Red Sox fans will never forget Rocket Roger abandoning us for more money and then actually ending up playing for the Yankees. I don't want him to have another series under his belt.

Besides, cheering for the White Sox is like cheering for last year's Red Sox.... you can help but want their dry spell to be over.

4. No problem that's just sports.
What I find so frustrating are the members who mix politics with sport, and use this as a platform to bash Texas. We democrats here, have enough on our plate without the barrage of hateful posts that have escalated since the playoffs began. Rita was also used in this manner by some members. We had members cheerfully gloating that Rita was going to hit Texas. When they removed the body of one of my neighbors, I found myself thinking would these same members be cat calling his family that he deserved to die because of the state he lived in. I would hope not, but I'm afraid some would.

12. I'm a Sox fan... and one of the reasons I'm rooting for the Stros is the
Rocket.

I laughed my ass off when he went to the Astros after telling the Yanks he was going to retire.

2. Thank you
I thought a lot of people who went to Crawford learned that a lot of Texans are dems, and we aren't all gun toting redneck assholes. Sure, there are gun toting redneck assholes here, but we aren't ALL like that.

I was at the final game against the Cubs, in the nosebleed seats. There was a big sign on the wall near the concession stands bragging about Halliburton building the park. Did I want to vomit? Yes. Does that mean I don't love my Astros? Hell no!

If you have another reason for cheering for the White Sox, fine. Don't hate the team for political reasons. Hate them for baseball reasons (if you must!).

6. I can understand your sensitivity.
We bash the South, and Texas in particular, quite often. I'm guilty myself. And quite frankly, I think the bashing is often quite well deserved.

Still, I hope that even despite the bashing you do realize that none of us DUers think that every single person in your state is dragging their knuckles on the ground and hoping for the Confederacy to rise again. I also hope you realize that we not only recognize your existence and empathize that you have to deal with being surrounded by uber-conservatives, most of us consider our Southern Brethren to be our most valuable assets. We know how hard it has to be to be liberal down there, and quite frankly, I admire not only your courage, but also your ability to simply think for yourself and not be cowed in to being like everyone else.

That all said, there's no fucking way in hell I can cheer for the Astros thanks to Roger Clemens (see above - I'm a Bay Stater and Sox fan). Of course, I'm not cheering for the White Sox either. I'm just hoping there's a stadium implosion with the Bush family on hand.

10. quote: I think the bashing is often quite well deserved.
The problem is some folks don't distinguish the hate they feel for our government ( for lack of a better word) from the people.

Examples

This is hard to take. I love my state, despite the fact that I hate the government here. It's like someone saying I hate your mama. I can only speak for myself, but I find this very painful.

Your displeasure with Clemens has no pain attached to it because you are not painting every citizen with the same brush.

Now this is painting every fan with the same brush.

I understand that most folks are just letting off steam, but it's like hubby ranting about what one of the kids did but yelling to you about it instead of them. There is no other state on DU that has to take this kind of abuse on an almost (lately) daily bases. It wears on you to where there are times I just can't take it.

7. Hear hear! If you're not going to root for the Astros, don't blame it on
Texas assholes.

Besides, folks, your own states have assholes too. Look at my states: CA = Schwarzenegger, Nixon, Reagan, Dornan, Rohrabacher, etc. MD = Agnew & Ehrlich, just to name two.

:hi: Of course, we're likely to rid ourselves of that mistake very soon.

13. Well, no they're not... but they do play at Enron Field

or whatever they're calling it this week :eyes:

I don't hold with these newfangled names for ballparks. It'll always be Enron Field to me! :-)

Seriously, props to Houston for going beyond the call for Katrina's people. It only makes sense since N.O. is the 'Stros' AAA city; Lance Berkman among others once played for the Z's. Plus, won't it be fun to watch DeLay try to throw out the first pitch while handcuffed?
