60's -70's music lovers I have a question |
|
I was wondering if anyone knows if the Beatles "White Album" was ever reissued or if it was a one time thing?(I'm Talking about the 1968 or 69 LPs) I've been told that it was only pressed once and that it is a rare vinyl to get a hold of.
I ask this as my 20yr. old sister is a major fan of the 60's early 70's music and she is hoping to obtain a "White Album" lp and I don't want to be snookered into buying something that is not "original."
Also what is some of the greatest Hendrix and Doors albums. I mean if you were to spend about $50.00 or more on an LP which ones would you buy? I know she would like to own The Doors "Strange Days" but what are some other great ones?
Thanks for any help. I don't have a clue when it comes to much of the era music. I do like most of the songs from that era but I don't know much about who sang what.

1. i have a UK copy of the white album |
|
limited edition on white vinyl-never been played, bought it probably early 70's. you might want to go to a BN or Borders or if you are lucky enough, although the info is probably on the net too, and google it to find more info-they do come up for sale and often go very reasonably. Strange Days is a good choice for a Doors LP, IMHO.

6. I've looked up ebay listings |
|
but a lot of them do not give a year for pressing. That's why I asked about if it was only pressed once. I do not want to buy something under false pretenses. I have been led to believe that it was only pressed once and therefor rare but I do not know if this info is true. I figured I could trust the folks on DU for more accurate info.

18. I know Rating is everything on ebay |
|
I try not to buy from anyone with less than a 99% positive rating. So far I have been very successful and have not been taken, but I also know what I'm buying and have a general idea of the true worth. LPs on the other hand especially of music I know little about is another story. I wouldn't know if they were telling the truth until after the fact, then all I could really do about it is leave a negative for them. That used to mean something on ebay, but here lately there are quite a few sellers with quite a bit of negatives and still selling.

But wants more Doors. Thanks for the info. If I can get the LPs she would love to have, they will make nice X-mas and B-Day gifts for the next few years.

Was sold commercially for years before it went to CD. The demand was too great to limit to a single pressing.

14. Yes, I am sure this is true. |
|
I am relying on memory here so you may want to do some research.
Originally the album was released in way that was very expensive to produce and was re-released differently later. This may be why you have the impression that it was only a limited release. Originally there was a plain white cover with "the Beatles" in embossed lettering on the front (there was nothing printed on the outside). In addition, inside there were 4 8" x 10" glossy photagraphs, one of each of the Beatles and a Beatles poster. Later versions were not embossed "the Beatles" was printed in grey on the front. I do not believe that the photos and poster were found in all subsequent releases. I think that if you have the embossed version with all the photos and poster that it is collectible, but the Beatles were so hugely popular that I can't believe that it would be particularly rare, thus not real valuable.

7. I know that for some time after it was released... |
|
...that they were numbered, with the first four going to the Beatles themselves. Maybe that's the rare collector's item that you're thinking of.

That is probably why the person that was telling me about the "White Album's" rareity thought that it was rare. Now I know what to look for. Thanks again.

8. The originals are numbered |
|
Like all Beatles albums, the "White Album" was available on vinyl through the seventies and eighties as a re-pressing.
But the record is unique amongst Beatles albums (and, actually, albums in general) in that the original release had unique "serial numbers" printed on its face. Also, the words "The BEATLES" on the cover are embossed on the original cover.
Like all later Beatles albums, the white album had "Apple" labels on the records; the reprints just had brown "Columbia" labels.
Accept no substitutes!

10. Thanks for the info.... |

I did see a "White Album" listed on ebay that had the numbers and the embossed "The Beatles" on the front. Plus there were a few others listed stateing they had the apple lables.
I knew I could count on DU for the facts.

the originals pretty much keep it under lock and key. I saw that there were supposed original pressings were selling on ebay for around $200.00 - $300.00. For that price they better be original and have very low numbers.

9. I'm not quite sure on the White Album. |
|
My dad has the original, but I don't know if it was ever reissued.
My dad is very proud of a extremely rare Simon & Garfunkel album he owns. He was a big Simon & Garfunkel fan back in the 60's but he bought an album of their's simply titled Simon & Garfunkel. In 1967 (without S&G knowing) a record company named Pickwick took their old songs from high school like "Hey Schoolgirl" and put them together on an album but on the cover he used a recent picture of them so people would buy it thinking it was a new alubm. When S&G found out, they sued and the album was pulled. It's an extremely rare album that my dad has. And it wasn't until recently that he found out that it was a collector's item.
Anyway, I'm not sure on the White Album. That's something I'd have to check on.

I would recommend the box set Stages, live shows from stockholm, paris, atlanta and I think monterey. One from each year 67-70, outstanding shit. Unfortunately mine was stolen, otherwise I would burn you a copy.

don't you just want to strangle people that steal. My Uncle had almost all of the Elvis albums that were from his first record label and a once close friend of the family ended up with them. Of course we had no way of proving that they were my Uncle's and therefor could not get them back. Those puppies are worth a little bit.
What do you think about the Hendrix Experience box set? Would this also be a good one? What year did that come out?

23. reissued lots of times |
|
I first bought it on vinyl in 1983, and the surest way to tell it was a reissue was because it had "The Beatles" in light gray letters. The original had it embossed in white. Still, it had the poster, and was readily available. With the advent of CD's, it may not be that hard to get even a re-issue in a good used record store.

:hi: I was wondering when you'd be coming along. Why did you change your name? It looks as if you are not the only one who changed thier name tho.
Thanks for the info. I really don't know a lot about that era of music. Nor do I know much about vinyl. I know a lot of songs from the 60's-70's but I don't always know who sings them. But I'm that way with all era of music. I also never purchased a lot of LPs except for 45s. I was always to busy to sit and listen to a lot of music. Still am. Seems like the only time I can listen to music is when I'm in the car and then I'm forced to listen to everybody elses music.
I really want to know that I won't be taken because of my lack of knowledge. I want to buy records that are original or will be worth something someday. I mean if your going to collect, it might as well be worth it. My little sister is worth buying these LPs for so I want to know that they are worth buying. Only the best will do.
Well hope to be around a little more often. Talk with you later :hi:

The real albums, first pressings, have raised, white serial numbers on the front of them. Other printings have serial numbers in printed black or gray. LuLu (old enough to be all of your mothers)
