Excellent film!
The one part of it that I found nauseating was the violence, but it was necessary to convey it throughout the film, to show how sadistic the Captain Vidal figure was.
There are already several hundred reviews on the film, I'm sure, so I'm not really going to add to them, but I must say I was quite impressed with it, and have nothing but praise for the director, the cast and the art direction, which was simply outstanding.
I'm not usually one for seeing foreign films with subtitles, but I made an exception with this one, and I am glad I did. There is a grittiness and a feeling of desperation in the film which translates well, regardless of the language spoken. In fact, I think the fact that it is a foreign film makes it seem even more real in the end.
Anyone else see it? A friend told me to see "The Devil's Backbone" which is also by del Toro, because it's in the same style and similar in other ways. Of course, he also chided me by saying I got some culture by seeing the film instead of the usual mainstream films, but I ignored him on that.

And I agree with your friend, check out The Devil's Backbone. It's really good and much less violent.

2. The film has a lot in common with "Spirit of the Beehive," which I liked better. |
|
But I liked "The Faun's Labyrinth" (the original title), as well.
