"Home Movies" (the cartoon) fans: am I missing something? |
|
A friend of mine has suggested a number of cartoons to check out, "Home Movies" being one of them. I've watched the first three episodes, and I'm not quite getting it. Should I give it a little more time? It took me a little bit to get into "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," but this doesn't seem to hook me in the same way that one did. Thoughts?

2. I've never been a fan. |

Sometimes Adult Swim shows rely a little to heavily on "this should be funny to you" instead of actually being funny. "Home Movies" is one of those shows.

4. I really like "Home Movies" |

and find ATHF, Robot Chicken and most of the other Adult Swim shows *really tedious*. Squid Billies does have its moments. And I kind of liked the show with Space Ghost (or was it Harvey Birdman?) as a talk show host. He interviewed Bjork, among other interesting people. 'Can't remember that name of that show and haven't seen it for a while.
The problem with many of those shows is that they are relying too heavily the fact that their animation is "non-traditional" and confusing shock value with humor.
I'm SURE there are people doing both funnier and more cutting-edge animations than the junk on Adult Swim.

5. The first three episodes aren't great, but the series is awesome |
|
Allow me to look into my archives to suggest some episodes:
Ep. 106 (season one, episode six): "Director's Cut" (the kids take on a rock opera based on Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis") Ep. 110: "School Nurse" Jason and McGuirk both fall in love with the new school nurse Ep. 209: "Class Trip" The kids try to shoot a movie inside a hotel during a class trip. Ep. 301: "Shore Leave" The kids' parents send them off to do things that "normal kids" do. Disaster ensues. Ep. 304: "Improving Your Life Through Improv" The kids get sentenced to sensitivity training, and McGuirk shows up for the $50 Ep. 306: "Renaissance" The kids, Mr. Lynch and McGuirk play parts at a Renaissance fair Ep. 402: "Camp" The kids go to performing arts camp over the summer and McGuirk shows up on the lam from a male-bonding group Ep. 404: "Bye Bye Greasy" Brendon directs the school musical, starring McGuirk Ep. 406: "Curses" Brendon has to use a curse jar, and everybody picks up on the idea Ep. 413: "Focus Grill" The last episode, and a great one
Let me know if you like these episodes better. Season one got good late, season two was kind of weak, but three and four were genius and the show overall is quite good. Enjoy!

6. Right now, my personal favorite is 'The Party' |
|
Brendon attends a birthday party for that really annoying whiney kid (can't remember his name :P), but it's very funny. Oh right, Fenton. That little shit.

"I WANTED THE BLUE ONES MOM, THE BLUE ONES!!! YOU'VE RUINED MY PARTY!"
That's also the episode where Jason "drinks" too much by eating too much candy and Melissa has to send him home in a cab. I was considering putting that one on my list but I didn't want to make it too long.

|
That also goes by 'Coach' The episode where Coach learns to be a bartender cracks me up, too.

7. I LOVE 'Home Movies' myself, and so do some of my friends... |
|
but I can understand why some people wouldn't care for it. The later episodes are better, though.

12. Am I the only person who smacks their head when people ask "Am I missing something?" |
|
Taste is subjective. Just because other people like it don't mean you will, if you watch it and don't like it, then you don't like it, simple as that.
