Poll question: How old were you when you got drunk for the first time?
I was 16, and it was off of beer and vodka.

11. If we were going down to the first time we drank...
... It would be around 11 for me too. My friend and I stole a pint of cherry vodka from the local drug store and killed off about 3/4 of it. The only thing that kept us from getting hammered was that we also stole some Copenhagen which we had in our mouths while we drank the booze. The combination made us puke up everything we had drank before it could take effect. :toast:

Does drinking one beer, thinking "This is lame," and then going skateboarding instead count as high tolerance? That was basically my only rinking experience.

16. Neither have I
I was introduced to alcohol at a very young age (4) - just sips and small glasses full - so getting drunk was not a rebellion in my teen life.

While I loved the taste as a kid, by the time I got to legal age, I found the 'happy' phase wore off too quickly, and I ended up depressed when I drank. That's when I stopped.

I could depress myself for far less money - like the price of a newspaper. :P

26. I was just never really interested in drinking.
When I was 13/14, when my friends started, the popular place to drink was the local skate park, so I'd have been there already just skateboarding and people would offer me a beer and I'd be like "this is lame, I'm going skateboarding." Haha. Then I learned about straight edge at 16 and never looked back.

18. am i the only one who waited until 21?
i had a glass of wine or two during holiday dinners and a beer once in a while, but the first time i got drunk was just after my 21st birthday. my dad took me out, got me falling down drunk (why he let me mix margaritas, white russians, rum and beer i will never know) and whooped my ass at pool.

none of my friends were old enough to drink and i couldn't drink on my birthday cuz i had a 7 a.m. final the next day.

44. if by "waiting until 21" = "waiting until legal", then i did...
When i was 18, it was legal for me to buy beer or wine, but not hard spirits.
Halfway through that year, that changed to 19...
When i turned 19, they changed it to 21. Go fig.

Luckily he was a good guy! Maybe I looked like it, but I just wasn't ready for dating. I'm not close at all to any of my high school peers, but if I had to go back and get together with one, it would be him. He was worldly (oh, so very worldly, he had teachers...), yet, he didn't take advantage of a situation when he could have. We remained very good friends throughout high school. A sweet guy!

27. 17, in Atlanta on a college band trip.
It was glorious. One half pint of Jack Daniels, black label, 'cowboy style'. I didn't feel anything for a while then I realized that I was in the hotel hall in my underwear, laughing at everything. There were drunk kids draped all over furniture, up and down the hall, just a wonderful party from room to room. It was Dec 1967 and I had bought my copy of Magical Mystery Tour at Rich's earlier that afternoon - I still have it and it is playable. We were a marching band and our lines the next day were a bit crooked, but no one got bent over it.

If that happened nowadays they would probably arrest everyone in sight, and that is too bad.

30. 15. Keg beer - and got sick for 4 days!
It took another 15 years of suffering to piece together why I got THAT sick; that wheat and barley make me deathly ill.

Now..... it's called Celiac Disease. It had no name nor could it be diagnosed when my wife and I practically saved my life through 8 years of desperate, seat of our pants, blank-page reasoning and self-testing that, at least, showed that I couldn't eat things made from wheat or barley - and that not eating them gave me recovery - though we couldn't get ANY doctor to even LISTEN to what we had spent those years uncovering - or even give us a frickin' NAME for what we had found!

To have done that with NO medical support (in fact outright hostility to our ideas)is my life's greatest accomplishment.... so far. I owe my wife everything for helping me through it. I love her sooooooo much:loveya:

But... I digress.

My best friend at the time and I "fished" a bottle at the local U-Totem and went up to the gas station and chugged it in the bathroom. Felt pretty good so we decided to get another one. Drank that one and then we RAN a mile and a half up to the school to see the boys playing in Little League (oh Peter you were so hot in your Pirates uniform)

don't remember the fun we had there but my Mom was kind enough to go along with the stomach flu/food poisoning excuse I came up with at home later when I was puking my alcohol stinking guts out. She probably figured I had learned a good lesson.

and it was Vick's Formula 44 Cough Syrup - Cherry flavored. Mom was at work, I got home from school (double session, and I went in the morning that year) with a very bad sore throat. New bottle of cough syrup. I don't really remember it, but when Mom got home she couldn't get me to wake up. Meaning, I'd kinda go 'whaaa?" but not really wake up! Then she looked at the cough syrup bottle, which was more than half empty. I still get teased about that!

I never really cared for the taste of alcohol. I've always been too busy to brother with getting drunk too. It's just not my thing. I've got a son who is 4 now. Getting drunk doesn't seem like a smart thing to do when you are responsible for a young child.

73. I was 18 - a late bloomer - although my college experience more than made up for it.
It was at my friend's birthday party. I had a bunch of mudslides and mixed myself the Earthly equivalent of the "Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster". I mix strong drinks these days, but back then when I didn't know how to mix people would taste my beverages and comment "Well...it doesn't completely taste like alcohol".

I drank three of them, like my hero, Zaphod Beeblebrox. :-)

Needless to say, I was one drunk fool that night.
