I should be in Hawaii right now, but instead, I'm... |
|
sick.
I guess I could use a hug...
even though I know this seems petty.
I was really looking forward to the trip.

We were going to try to leave today, but overnight I got worse. If I could have cleared up my ears a bit, I might have tolerated everything else. Though, my aching joints are getting the better of me, too...I feel like crap. And, when I'll begin to feel better physically, I know it will really hit me-- my lost opportunity to spend another week in the place I love most. Thanks for the hug, too. I hope this isn't depressing.

And not the least bit petty.
I hope, at least, that you can rescheduled the vacation when you're feeling better!

The next chance we'll get will be in September. I think I'll take extra precautions, this time, leading up to the vacation-- no drinking, no dusting, lots of sleep (everything I neglected to do this time). I should know, by now, that I am far from invincible. :eyes:

13. Nothing petty in the least about Hawaii. I was in Honolulu last week. |
|
I miss the warmth. It's only ~65 F here. It was 85 F there on O'ahu, AND there was no humidity. That was the part that blew my mind. I've never known heat without humidity before. I mean, :wtf: Why can't we ever get that?
Where were you going?

We were going to stay in a friend's condo in Maui. And, I was really looking forward to taking the ferry over to Molokai for the day. I've never been to Molokai. It's one of the last 2 islands (that and Nihau) I have left to see.

And, thanks for the laugh. I, too, was horrified. Of all the times to be sick. Happens twice per year-- around Christmas time and whenever I least expect it! Thanks.

21. I just got back from my first trip to Hawaii, finally completing all 50 states |
|
It was fantastic, better than I expected. Awesome scenary and much lower humidity than I anticipated. The people were incredibly friendly and it's true what they say about the drivers. I would signal left or right and the first car would immediately let me change lanes with a motion and a smile. I almost wanted to play a cruel joke and dump about a thousand South Florida Hispanic drivers in Oahu just to see the immediate contrast and inevitable confrontations.
The only negatives were the NCL cruise ship Pride of Hawaii was not as good as the Norwegian Star I took to Alaska in 2005. Much poorer layout and missing many things I used on the Star. Plus the activities were worse. Supposedly it's going to be docked at the end of the year, change names, and transformed into a ship NCL uses in the Caribbean. That's a rapid switch since the ship is less than a year old.
Also, the food prices in Hawaii are surreal. I stayed 9 days in Waikiki Beach after the cruise. Restaruant prices seemed high until I checked out the grocery prices. The closest full size grocery store to my hotel sold a gallon of milk for $9.05, half gallon of ice cream for $8.85, half gallon of orange juice for $6.69 and a midsize box of Raisin Bran for $6.35. More than 80% of consumable goods are imported and 98% of them by ship so the prices are wild.
My favorite was the climb to Diamond Head. Also the lava field on the Big Island, driving through it in my rental car. And the Pali Overlook in Oahu with 70 or 80 mile per hour winds forcing me to hang on to the rail while enjoying the spectacular view of the windward side. LOL. I saw a golf course down there, the Pali Golf Course, and decided to play it. Turned out it was the site of a gambling related shootout a few years ago in the parking lot, a dispute between two factions fighting for control of the local gambling operation. I had my playing partner take my picture on the first tee then he told me one of the guys who was shot ran toward the course and collapsed and died smack in the area of that first tee where I had my picture taken. Somehow it loosened me up and I smacked a great drive down the middle.

Sounds like you managed to have a good time. I took a couple of cruises when I was younger, but now I like to set my own schedule too much...and stay a lot longer at my favorite places. Though, I have heard you can see a lot of remote areas cruising the Hawaiian islands. It would, still, kill me to have to leave one of them after only a few hours.

25. I squeezed in as much as I could during the stops |
|
Edited on Sat May-05-07 08:20 PM by Awsi Dooger
The ship would typically dock from 6 AM to 6 PM. I'd have a quick breakfast and then grab the rental car and hit my itinerary. I did a great job this time totally ignoring the group excursions and forging my own path. I could manage much more that way and at cheaper cost. We stopped at Hilo, then Maui for two days, back to the Big Island to Kona (my least favorite, kind of the Hawaiian version of Gatlinburg, at least near the dock) and finally to Kauai.
But you're absolutely correct, the stops are much too brief. I took the cruise since I got a very good deal on it, and it would enable me to hit many of the islands in short order, before my time share exchange in Waikiki Beach to follow. I enjoyed that part of the trip much more, taking in the Pearl Harbor sites, etc. Next time I'm have to prioritize the other islands for longer periods and also the ones I missed, like Molokai.
Oh yeah, another highlight was the twisting drive to Hana on Mauai. That was our overnight stay so I was able to take my time.
