Music that people on DU wouldn't expect you'd like
I'm not a fan of death metal, but I do like some hard stuff. Like Metallica, System Of A Down, Sleater-Kinney, and Mastodon. I also like NIN's The Fragile and Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals. In hip hop, I like some Eminem, Gnarls Barkley, and Kanye West. In adult contemporary, I like a lot of Phil Collins's stuff, including with Genesis - I also really like Whitney Houston. I love Linda Ronstadt in general - even the more A/C stuff. In techno, I like Goldfrapp, which is techno-leaning. In dance, I enjoy a few Britney songs but love Stella Soleil's stuff. I enjoy Sarah Brightman, too, who is opera-leaning.

In fact, there are three CD boxes sitting on the passenger seat of my car right now - Frank Sinatra, Avril Lavigne, and Cheap Trick.

But looking back and listening to some of those cuts, some of them were pretty good. KC & The Sunshine Band actually were pretty funky and sharp players.

68. When a movement loses its power it's no longer a threat
Which is why Korporate Amerika embraces the Ramones, a band they avoided like the plague back in the day.

I was pleasantly surprised to listen to KC and appreciate their musicianship when I was no longer worried that I'd start wearing polyester if I was infected by their sound.

4. Bad 80s arena rock and metal.
"The Final Countdown" and "Rock You Like A Hurricane" being prime examples.

Also: Sleater-Kinney looks so out of place in a list that includes Metallica, SOAD and Mastodon, haha.

on edit: Speaking of 80s arena rock, I like Bon Jovi, but I guess they wouldn't be a stretch for me.

39. Speaking of pop/rock...
Have you heard the last Cheap Trick CD "Rockford"? It's my biggest guilty pleasure in years.Totally catchy and addictive pop/rock (a tad harder than a lot of their stuff thanks to some excellent production, but still well within the realm of pop).

Samples of the songs on the CD can be found here;

7. When I feel like bad music, I listen obsessively to Phil Collins solo.
Edited on Sun May-06-07 06:29 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
(I'm self-destructive; what can I say?) At least that makes me dance, eve if it's mindless sap.

I always play this Barry White CD, as well. I can't call that "enjoyment;" it's more like, again, sadistic amusement at how every track sounds nearly the same. And amusement at his voice.

Other than that, my music listening is pretty expected of my type.

ETA: I forgot Steve Winwood. I don't know what the hell the consensus is on him, but for some reason I absolutely love the song "Arc of a Diver." As well as the song "My Love's Leavin'." And I don't get it at all.

Edited on Mon May-07-07 01:26 AM by mvd
I'm not sure I would buy Mastodon, but I haven't ruled it out. Their metal is hookier than real death metal, and while the lead singer screams, for some reason it isn't all that grating. The drumming certainly adds to their strong rhythms. I have my favorite styles - classic rock, power pop, pop/rock, folk, singer/songwriter, rock, folk/rock, and Motown - but as you said, I do get in the mood for a variety of styles.

44. There's a couple songs on new Mastodon where he actually sings a bit.
But he's not anywhere near to the cookie monster death metal stuff (I love that stuff myself...it's fun to sing along that way until your throat hurts, but I can sure see how it would drive others bonkers).New Mastodon is,dare I say it,more Prog Rock than death metal.

Death metal is like watching Dawn of the Dead to me...silly fun.But I could only listen to maybe one CD a day of the stuff, though I'm like that with everything...always need new sounds, and no one style fits my mood for long.In the course of a day my music bounces all over the genres, never finding a home in any of them.

It's like a drug, and I'm just thankful that my friend buys about 20 CDs a month to keep giving me a new fix.And if you think death metal is grating try listening to Merzbow or John Weisse, his two favorites.I can't decide if it's pure noise or pure brilliance.See if you can make it through 20 seconds of this, then imagine it cranked as loud as at a club, and you'll know what I hear everyday from downstairs (two floors down, even). :)

I've never been able to listen to opera, though I love classical music.

But ever since my trip to Italy, I get it! I listened to a Pavarotti album yesterday, and I was taken back to the streets of Rome. Opera is such a great complement to Italy's architecture, culture, language, and food. Ever since the trip I've been jonesing to hear it.

49. The New Monkees
No, not a new album by the original Monkees. I'm talking about the only album released by the New Monkees, an attempt to cash in on the Monkees revival in the 1980s. The album is actually quite good, with some fine session players (Tower of Power horns!) and great songwriters (Tom Cochrane, among others).

Oh, and the "New Monkees" actually played on it. Well, except for Jared. He just sang.

/Not that the original Monkees didn't play, of course, because they did.
//Quitting while I'm ahead.
///Then again, I just told everybody that I like the New Monkees, so am I really ahead?

59. I have been taken to task
for liking Sheryl Crow. And I have been known to sing along to some Bon Jovi now and then, but only on the radio.

Oh, and I have a soft spot for GNR, including the pap.

My reputation is now ruined.

Malloy plays a great song about religion that goes "my God is better than your God." But I certainly wouldn't go "My Radiohead is better than your Good Charlotte." :-)

78. ah you're no fun!
;)

I spent years buidling up my indie cred by loving and viewing the dizzily and wonderfully obscure!

And, some music is crappy, and deserves what it gets.

Edited on Mon May-07-07 10:48 PM by mvd
I find all tastes to be equal since you can't say what is right for everyone. :hi:

Something I think is very crappy noise might be brilliant to someone else. Also, I can buy obscure artists while acknowledging what is good in the mainstream.

81. BTW
I knew tigereye was just joshing with me, but it is an interesting question. If that's the music outlook for her, she shouldn't change it. I just don't believe in real guilty pleasures. I think it's a matter of some music being more sophisticated or edgy or more eloquent lyrically than other stuff, but I still can't really say one is necessarily better than the other. I prefer a mix so you can have different experiences..

71. I like Liberace's very early, serious, 1950s recordings, before he became campy.
He had genuine piano talent. Too bad he devolved into a vegas parody of himself.

85. Can you picture me listening to country?
...much less liking it?

Not all of it, mind you... but the occasional Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, or Rascal Flatts song will keep me from changing the station.

I also listen to a lot of the classical programming on the local public broadcasting station here, as well as their celtic music program.

91. new alternative stuff
and i am a ways over 50

Never did understand how come I was supposed to become imprinted with the music of my youth.
I do not wish to be enslaved listening to stations that play the songs of the 70's or 80's. Thought alot of it was garbage then, still do.
