I collect books. I went a little overboard there for a while, so I'm getting rid of some of them. I thought I had fewer than I have, it seems.
My favorite things to collect are illustrated children's books.

I did this for years, long before I had children. Now my children are teenage boys and for some reason I stopped. I'm going to resume collecting. Illustrated books rock!

I'm going through my first level of weeding...tho this is really hard because I've spent years collecting the first edition of first novels for lit fiction. I'm making myself put most up them in my sell boxes.
I also collect pop-up books...I consider them a 3-d form of an illustrated kid's book, unless it's the pop-up kama sutra (which, btw, has a pop-up that lowers a woman in a basket. I suppose some people do that, maybe Pammy and Tommy Lee? I never saw the video.
I asked about collecting not only to talk to people here, but also to see if anyone might be interested in books I'll be selling later. I thought I'd put some scans in the DU mrktplace.
I also have a ton of political books. I thought I'd gotten through every box at least on one pass, but turns out I was wrong. Next time I take a box to the basement I want to see how many boxes I have to sell (books I plan to sell in a garage sale, not as collectibles, tho I am sooo tempted to take those 1st/1st out.
tell me to step away from the boxes!!!!! :)

becoming a card carrying member of the Divorced Wives Club. Tables were my first obcession. I still have an awesome turn of the century (1900) farmers table. That eventually became a bit much so I got rid of most of them and turned to Pink Fostoria Depression Glass. I still have a few pieces. It is such a pretty pattern. Very simple and flowing. And, of course, books. Being the granddaughter of a librarian, books are a staple, kinda like food.

I am such a wimp. And of course my kids know how to get around me. my son with asperger's doesn't always understand but he's also really good at "forgetting." other son too. we set up a schedule to share certain tasks like cleaning the b.r. and they do a half-assed job and... it's frustrating.
another reason I want to unclutter my life - theirs too.

who has been working 2 jobs, attending grad school, totally not keeping up with what's going on with my kids' schoolwork, who started collecting some books because I thought I might need to open a store here to stay in town. my kids could live with their dad, and now that he's remarried he's more stable than they've ever seen him and would have a hard time if they moved before high school. now that he's stable, it's been my turn to freak.
cleaning my house comes in about 87th on my list of priorities.

but I got my ARCs for free and my 1st/1st for either .25, .50, or 1.00.
It's a good thing the library changed the way they do their library sale and started charging more. okay then, my 1/1st's stay in the basement. you can't sell to a dealer anyway, if you want to make a nice profit. so I withdraw that offer... at least until after my garage sale.

I want to get rid of about half of the crap in my life. but books are also...I couldn't imagine not having my own books. I've done that since elementary school. And I still have books from high school, even. but I have an entire room that was full of boxes of books-- six boxes high. they weren't all for me. but of course as I'm getting rid of some I think... you know, I really want to read that. argh!
I need to get back to my exciting sorting work too. I'll have to work for a bit and come back here for a break.

I usually get extra copies of event and band posters and Jazzfest posters.....Keep em unopened and twenty years from now big change. Some of the old Jazzfest posters are wotrth tons of money an every year they go up consdierably.
I also ahve two good freinds, Frenchy and Scramble Cambell that do works of art at shows and then sell them. I ahve quite a few of their pieces too....
I used to frame them myself and save huge moeny. had a matte cutter and anice shop for it..

posters are much easier to save than books - less storage space, better storage in tubes. I do have some books that I've put back for my kids to sell after they are way out of print. mostly pop-ups still in their original, sealed shipping plastic. don't want to do too many of those, tho, because of the storage space required.

Books being one of them, too. I just can't help it, but I know I'm not alone on this one. What is it about books that we just love so much? Dunno.
I half-heartedly collect a bunch of things. Coins. Spoons (yes, it's crazy). Rocks/gemstones/minerals. Kitchen stuff (gadgets etc).
Here's how it often happens for me: I go to a thrift store and find something interesting and I think hey I can sell this on ebay, so I take it home, do some research and figure out what it is and what it's worth, and by then I'm invested in the thing, and often will see more at thrift stores and will pick those up too, now that I know something about them, and NO they never seem to make it to ebay, lol... and soon enough, I'm collecting them. ::sigh::

Mostly Jazz and Classical. I have both Vinyl and CDs, and even some Vinyl that was never released in the US. I got that one for free from a jazz artist that I helped with some recording.
I have some other genres too, but the bulk of it is Classical, Chorale, and Jazz.
