Stranded Passengers To Sue American Airlines
The Dallas Morning News reported that two passengers who were stranded on American Airlines planes diverted due to a major storm have filed class action suits against the airline, accusing it of false imprisonment, fraud and negligence. The experience spurred one of the two passengers, Kate Hanni, to start an advocacy group for an air passenger's bill of rights. Hanni and Catherine Ray, Fayetteville Ark., alleged that passengers were stranded on planes with overflowing toilets and little food or water. Nearly 120 flights were diverted due to the storm, according to American, which has since worked to improve its system for dealing with severe weather, installing new software for tracking diverted flights and now permitting passengers to leave planes after four hours, if safety allows. 2. New York State passed a law that was upheld by the courts.
New York State passed a law which applies to JFK and LaGuardia airports, two major hubs.

The airlines sued and argued that only the FAA could regulate airlines.

The trial court disagreed with the airlines and agreed with the passengers.
