Who finds "House" annoying? |
|
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 12:19 AM by CreekDog
I normally wouldn't watch it, but without cable tonight (and lucky to even have power) I'm forced to watch what my rabbit ears can pull in. And, no, I'm not gonna read any books...
Anyway, I don't know much about this show, having exposure to just a couple of episodes, but it seems to me this show works like this:
dr #1: very good medical observation and point, but not good enough dr #2: also very good medical observation and point, but still not good enough dr house: obtuse, sarcastic remark from which #1 and #2 can possibly decipher and get the correct answer, which is good enough and which only dr house can know.
now, in theory, house is teaching them to be like he is, but then they never actually pull that off or else the show would, mercifully, end.

2. I haven't watched it yet. |
|
Based on the previews, I keep thinking I might like it, but I'm always busy when it comes on. One of these days, I'm gonna watch an episode.
But I can see how his character could come off as annoying.

And his character is annoying on the surface. However, when you watch a few episodes, you begin to see how complex the House character really is. Hugh Laurie does a great job - and the character, like other characters of the show, tend to defy any one-dimensional description, such as "he's arrogant" or "he wants others to be like him".
It's deeper than that - watch more, and I think you'll enjoy it.

I find him superficially annoying but the character has admirable qualities.
And the stories have been intriguing.

4. I actually like the show |
|
But maybe because even though House is a jackass, his character is very interesting because you don't normally see doctors pictured like this on TV. Plus, he's a skeptic and atheist (which I also am) and I like seeing that personified..... I admit, though, this show is definitely not for everyone...

In fact, I've been working on a rap song that name checks him.
'I'm the tightest MC...any other's a louse. I'm higher than Hugh poppin' Vicodin on motherfucking "House".'
Ok...so it's a work in progress...

9. What I find annoying is how unrealistic it is |
|
The way he orders all these tests, or even wackier still, gets the residents themselves to perform them (hah!), or makes them break into patients' homes and look for evidence. Yeahrightsure, in what world?

That's what gets me too about the show. Plus--he's a jerk, and I guess viewers are supposed to find that charming somehow.

10. IMHO - House is a great show |
|
There is a lot going on and it takes a while to get the back stories - which are essential. The show actually develops characters and with the complexity of the medical cases, it is more thoughtful and entertaining that the usual fare. I don't think House wants the other doctors to be like him and the other doctors do not want to be like him - one even quit for fear of that happening. That is just one of the many tensions in the show.

Now I'd even say I hate the show - like, I don't even want to watch a commercial for it. So bad. So lame.

I loved him in Blackadder. My favorite with him is the WW1 series , although I dig the Elizabethan series even more. Miranda Richardson as the Queen was simply genius, and who can forget Lord Flashheart. Woof!

You've nailed the formula for every single one of them. We liked the show initially, but got tired of it pretty quickly. What a waste of a fine actor like Hugh Laurie......

it's formulaic (every week is "House's most challenging case yet") and because a REAL doctor who acted that way would last about two seconds in a real hospital.
But Hugh Laurie is excellent in the role, I have to admit. His American accent is perfection. When I saw him speaking in his real voice on some interview show, I was astonished.

33. Funny thing about his accent... |
|
I watched a House blooper reel and when he (or someone else) messes up, he doesn't revert to his natural accent. It takes a lot of concentration to fake an American accent as well as he does. I've noticed the same thing about Rachel Griffiths. (Australian actress who plays a lot of American characters)
