Dr. Phil on Britney: She Is in "Dire Need" of Help

Posted Jan 5th 2008 4:25PM by TMZ Staff

http://www.tmz.com/2008/01/05/dr-phil-on-britney-she-is-in-dire-need-of-help/

Dr. Phil has issued the following statement to ET about his visit with Britney Spears this morning.

"My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention.

She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her."

1. If he can convince her to get the help
she obviously needs, it really doesn't matter what I think of him.

6. Exactly.
If he convinces her to get the help she needs, he gets the props for that.

If he's simply looking to exploit her for ratings, I hope he burns in Hell.

7. Why not both? :P
Seriously though... I never understood how he got any kind of airtime or anything. I'm fairly certain I could train a gorilla to do the same thing he does.

Only the gorilla would use sign language, 'cause gorillas can't speak.

15. He was backed by Oprah.
In 1995, Oprah Winfrey had help from Phil McGraw to prepare her for the Amarillo Texas beef trial. Winfrey was so impressed with McGraw that she thanked him for her victory in that case, which ended in 1998. Soon after, she invited him to appear on her show. His appearance proved so successful that he began appearing weekly as a "Relationship and Life Strategy Expert" on Tuesdays starting in April 1998. In 2002, he launched his own syndicated daily television show, Dr. Phil, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Studios. The format is an advice show, where he tackles a different topic on each show, offering advice for his guests' troubles. McGraw has authored a number of self-help books on topics such as relationships and weight loss.

In 2005, he signed a five-year extension of his syndication deal with his show's distributors, King World Productions, Inc. The deal will pay McGraw a reported US$15 million and keep him on the airwaves through the 2013–2014 television season. McGraw currently lives in Beverly Hills.

Proof positive that a thinking public should take any and all people "backed by Oprah" with a grain of salt.

18. Other: These two propositions are not mutually exclusive.
I can think of no one better qualified as saviour to Britney's brand of White Trash than a self-aggrandizing psychological bully. Gawd knows her parents never set any boundaries.

20. I'd like it more if he just showed up and helped and didn't have to have press releases about it.
Should I issue a press release before I help a little old lady across the street? And how will he look if he fails?

I'm very glad that someone will stand up and help, but...well, I hope that he manages to help her. I'll give a big thumbs-up if he does.

22. Agreed. He could have chosen to help anonymously, but he didn't.
There's no doubt that she needs help. At first I felt a sense of amusement as the result of this celebrity train wreck, but soon realized that there's nothing to laugh about...OR EXPLOIT...here.

If he really wants to help, he should do it behind closed doors. If he brings her on his show, he's a ratings whore.

I'm placing my money on "ratings whore."

29. He's nothing but a certified ambulance chaser now.
Any semblance of professionalism went down the tubes when he got his own show,
and he has continued to sink.

The only difference between him and Jerry Springer is that Dr. Phil wears a better suit and,
instead of bouncers, he has his wife.

For him to rush to the hospital the way he did was disgraceful. He should be ashamed.

24. It might be nice if the Spears family decided to work with an actual therapist
Dr. Phil's methods, IMHO, are less than professional at best. Considering the fact he chose to announce to the world his visit with Ms. Spears tells me that he has no regard for confidentiality at the very least.

37. Doesn't this break the HIPPA Law?
If "DR" Phil is representing himself as a Medical assistant - be it therapist, etc... you would think he wouldn't be able to utter a word about his conversations.

Why "meet" with her, try to help her, and then tell the world "She's totally F-d up".

Unless throughout there entire 1 hour meeting Brit kept telling him to leave, get the hell out of her room and let her go so she can get changed for a jammin' party she needs to get to. But, then again if he showed up unannounced.. he'd deserve that.

Either way.. totally classless.
