I just found out that a former co-worker of mine died. |
|
We worked at the same company until I left for my new one. We didn't work in the same office, but she assisted me a lot in my casework, and I met her several times. She was a great person.
She was 31 years old.

2. Very aggressive form of lung cancer. |
|
And she had never smoked, no one in her home smoked, the office was smoke free. Kind of unfair, ain't it?

Thirty one is way too young.
Second of all, young women in their thirties in this country are facing an epidemic of lung related deaths. Lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis type illnesses. Most of the time, the person who dies was not a smoker. And often it involves people who work in legal firms.
Often the environment is very dressy and both men and women wear colognes and perfumes. Rather heavily. Perfume a hundred years ago was something made from flowers and other natural things. Now they are made from chemicals, especially petroleum and ammonia derivatives.
And of course, the people who don't wear perfume still suffer from the perfumes outgassing off of everyone else.
Add to that the Febreeze and what not that the cleaning crew sprays around in the wee hours of the morning and you have an environment that is not very healthy.

9. Thank you, truedelphi, for the condolences, and the information. |
|
I had no idea of the incidence of lung-related deaths.
I don't recall her wearing perfume, and I don't think anyone in her office did (most of us don't wear it, because we know others are sensitive to it).
But it's possible she was exposed to other hazards.
Damn. It's just so sad.

Andy Kaufman and Christopher Reeve's wife both died of lung cancer at a very young age: neither smoked. I also lost a colleague in her mid-forties to lung cancer. Not only had she never smoked, but she was a militant anti-smoker and a vegetarian.
Weird. And sad.
My condolences.

I know smoking is a big cause of lung cancer, but there are also other things that cause it.
It's so sad, regardless of the reason/cause.

24. There has to be a reason why cancer seems to be more common now than ever |
|
I think toxins that end up in the human body have a lot to do with it, whether voluntary things, like smoking or eating processed/GMO foods, or involuntary, like what's in the air, the water, the walls of your house or office, etc.
I just lost a friend to a rare form of cancer. I don't think the doctors ever had a clue what might have caused it. Forget the name of the exact cancer but it was a fairly rare one, which didn't work in his favor, because chemo wouldn't touch it.
But watching him, and others deal with this kind of shit in recent years has convinced me not only of the need for serious health care reform, but also to take the battle to the corporate polluters and demand that they stop poisoning us.
Sorry for the mini political rant in this thread, but I feel that, for your friend, my friend, and all the others who have died far too young, we need to fight this toxic assault on us all.

31 is so young.
I remember losing a co-worker when I was just out of college and working for an auto insurance agency. It was a shock. She died of diabetes complications.
Yesterday a distant relative of mine died of lung cancer too. She was a lot older than 31, but her son is a smoker who is having lung problems, and he is about my age.
Lung cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancer, and people who have it tend to present for help after it has metastasized.
Cancer is evil.
It causes pain to the people who have it, and the people who love those who have it.
We need to wipe it out. And we could do it if we put more money and effort into it.
Hugs to you.

Last night I had a dream that a friend was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. I never had a dream that sucky before. There's nothing one can really say or do in such a situation.
