Finally saw "Superbad" last night |
|
God, that was funnier than it should've been.
I saw "Juno" this weekend, too. Michael Cera is becoming one of my favorite actors.

1. Wow. I was going to post a very similar message. |
|
I rented "Superbad" from Netflix about a month ago, and finally got around to watching it last night. It wasn't a cinematic triumph of the spirit, or anything like that, but it was quite amusing.

I rented it a few weeks back as well and was thinking of posting about it as well.
I can see a few guys I knew back in the day getting a fake ID with the name "McLovin" on it.

And the scene towards the end...with the two guys lying next to each other and saying they loved each other...it was surprising to see it. It was nice...I didn't expect it.

It's very funny, very sweet, very touching. The performances are great, and the screenplay is fantastic.

one of the cops wrote the screenplay. And much of the cops' dialogue was ad-libbed. They were great, and I don't much like Bill Hader.

definitely appealed to the sophmore in us..AND it had more one-liners than you can shake a stick at..."WHY MCLOVIN? WHY?"

I'm like the female version of that character, only an artist not a musician. And I love my spouse.

18. I was impressed at how |
|
Jennifer Garner - whom I don't typically like - was able to play that character.
But a lot of the beauty of both Bateman's and Garner's character was the screenplay. It was complex, beautifully done, and just felt "real".
I expect it will win the Oscar for best original screenplay - and that's always my measure of a good movie. Look at the list of Best Picture movies - it's a mixed bag. Look at the list of Best Screenplay movies - almost all classics.

19. You're right. The screenplay was absolutely stellar. |
|
Every time a character could've taken a stereotypical turn ("the uptight suburban wife" or "the bitchy, put-upon stepmom" or "the unrefined, simple, blue-collar dad"), Diablo Cody had them say or do something totally refreshing and complex yet totally believable. Nobody was a total asshole and nobody was a perfect angel. Everyone had their quirks and their failings and their great qualities. Sure, Jennifer Garner's character needed to lighten up and not be so generic, but you got the feeling that being a mom would help her discover that about herself. And yes, Jason Bateman's character should've been more vocal about his needs and wants long before now, but while his timing was selfish he wasn't a total jerk or anything.
It was the absolute polar opposite of the characters and screenplay in "Waitress" (which I saw about 4 days prior to seeing "Juno"). I truly hope it wins the Oscar.

21. It might be more of a guy movie |
|
but I've known women who thought it was very funny, too.
It doesn't really come from a guy perspective - but the humor is largely adolescent male. But it's chockful of great one-liners.

I have the unrated disc. I don't know if the film itself is different from the theatrical release, but the outtakes are hysterical.
I'd heard good things about it and was surprised to find out it was just a teenage sex farce. But damn, it was a GREAT teenage sex farce.

32. I hope Michael Cera expands his range.. |
|
I loved him in Arrested Development, Juno, and Superbad. But the fact that he essentially played the exact same character in all 3 makes me worry about his range and potential for other roles. I think he could be a good actor but I think he hopefully starts doing some other things or else the novelty is going to wear off really quick.
