Whatever Happened to the Milkman?

not that one

you know, the real milkman

We had a metal box outside and the milkman delivered milk

I can't remember when that stopped, but probably in the 70's

Was it the amorous milkman that stopped the real milkman from coming? (to deliver milk you PEVs)

:hi:

1. Now, what if you left the milk out there for a couple hours?
Wouldn't it go bad?

3. he came early in the morning
and you knew when he came

so you got the milk quickly afterwards

leave your old bottles out (they re-used them)

and get the new bottles

16. That's the punchline
Of a very old dirty joke.

In reality, I expect the milkman and the iceman have awakened to their true natures, and have gone off together to raise free-range heirloom poultry on a ranch in New Mexico. They sell the eggs to organic restaurants for cruelty-free omelettes. On weekends they host meditation workshops, and are very, very happy.

Or at least I'd like to believe so.

38. the really sad thing- it used to be a family business.
not sure if jim is the sole owner now, or if there are some mortified siblings out there. but they used to be a real asset to the city, soft hearted and decent people.
one time one of the kids found an orphaned deer. a tiny baby one with the spots and all. they raised the thing in a pen in the store. when it got too big, they donated the money to the city to build an enclosure in the little zoo we had. they endowed to take care of that one, i think it was called sammy, plus any others that found themselves in similar circumstances. last time i was there, which was years ago, they had a herd of about 20 or 30 of them.
now he is not only a thug, he is a batshit crazy thug.

26. He's just one in a long line of people whose professions have been made redundant
over the past few decades. Milkman, ice man, lighthouse keepers and the like. Modern technology and changing consumer needs have ensured the loss of many of these professions

While I welcome the modern technology -and even though I was born after most of these professions ceased -I still think it's sad that many of these professions are being phased out.

28. The advent of the larger grocery store that could store enough milk for everyone
and consolidation of milk producers, which led to higher transportation costs and so it was cheaper to just deliver milk to the two or three grocery stores in town instead of to each house.

41. One of the local dairies here just recently stopped....
They had been continuing the service, even though it really didn't make economic sense anymore. But finally it got to the point where they were losing enough money that they had to discontinue.

I was born in 1971, so I never got to experience such a thing.

42. This...
One evening a man took his pregnant wife to the hospital to give birth. The doctor told them that he'd developed a new machine and asked if they'd like to try it. The machine would take some of the woman's pain away and give it to the father thereby easing the mother's burden.

The couple thought it was a good idea and agreed to give it a try. The doc set it on 10% to begin with, telling the man that 10% was still probably more pain than he had ever felt. The man was surprised at how little pain he was feeling and asked for it to be increased. The doctor turned it up to 20% with the same results. This trend continued until the machine was set at 100%.

After the delivery both mother and father felt fine. The wife was relieved at having an almost painless labour and the father was still amazed at how little pain was actually involved.

The next afternoon, when they took the baby home, they found the milkman dead on their doorstep.
