Why is it heresy to point this out?

It's not objectifying women.

Human nature is fascinating. There are very obvious signs of interest in another person, and what Tom has described, more often than not, is flirtatious behavior on the part of a woman. If a woman flirts, she is probably likely to be interested in the person she's flirting with. Not ALWAYS, but we're just talking probability, here. All animals have certain mating behaviors; women and men are no different. And in this culture, hair can very decidedly be a sexual turn-on or used as a signal.

I'd be interested to know what kinds of male behaviors the OP thinks would indicate to a woman he's interested (the less than obvious ones, that is).

...me and most of the guys that I know? When we're interested in a woman? The way we go about showing that interest in her is: Showing no interest at all, treating her just like everybody else, and in some cases, treating her even worse. I know that sounds awful and I'm ashamed to admit it, but I am being totally, totally honest here. See, me and a lot of my friends believe, once you show too much interest in a woman, once you are too nice, it's over, cuz that's when she loses interest in you.

Is that the most fucked up thing you've ever heard, or what? But we believe it. And we do it.

So, hetero single ladies looking for a date: The next time a guy is being a real jerk to you, he probably totally digs you. And, if you're interested right back in him, play with your hair a little so he'll know that it's okay to ask you for your phone number.
