One of my customers is a fervent war supporter |
|
You guys see my peace symbol avatar and I think you can understand the conflict I'm feeling.
I'm a trucker and I deliver car parts to dealerships. Most of my stops are made in the wee hours of the morning so I don't have to deal with anyone. Just unlock the place, bring in the parts, lock 'er back up, and I'm outta there. But I usually meet my last customer. It never fails. I pull in there at about 6am and he's pulling in right after me. I've always thought of him as a nice guy and it would be cool to talk to him over a couple of beers. But, hell, it's my last stop and I just want to get out of there and get home. After I'm done there the hard part is done. But the guy likes to talk and I feel obligated to listen to him.
Today he revealed that one of his relatives, a nephew I think, is coming home for a little while after his third tour in Iraq. I find out from my customer that the kid is a reservist who is going to sign up for the army as a career. He likes what he's doing over there in Iraq. Thinks he's making a difference. His uncle is very proud. Says he hates to see the media's portrayal of events over there. Says his nephew says that most Iraqis are happy to see the Americans now days.
So I'm standing there wondering what to say. Fortunately for me, the guy didn't pause long enough for me to say anything. It meant standing there for 15 minutes. It meant listening to the guy say that Democrats don't have any courage. He might have had a point there. I wasn't courageous enough to tell him why the war is wrong. But it's a damn good job you know......

1. You're handling it the right way. It would be pointless for you to argue, so just |
|
pretend to be listening, and throw in a "uh-huh" and a "yeah, I guess" now and again.
If it would actually help stop the war if you argued, that would be one thing, but reality says it won't.
We can all of us only do what we can do, so don't feel bad about not arguing with the guy.

That is one damnded difficult place to be, for sure...
I wouldn't know what to say either...
Maybe someone here will have some good talking points for you...
Ugh...
Having to listen to him cannot be any fun, esp. when you just want to get home!

You may as well repeatedly smack your head against a concrete wall as engage a True Believer in debate.
Think of it this way: Could one of them ever convince you that the war is right?
