Damn kids! Daughter's friend goes missing.
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 06:11 PM by Fuzz
One of my daughter's friends, age 11, went missing after school today. Didn't come home, wasn't answering her cell phone.

Her girl scout leader called my daughter asking if she'd seen her, and that of course got me all worked up. This was two hours after school let out at this point, not a long time mind you, but the girl is 11 years old.

So we try to find out what we can do. My daughter and her both volunteered at the library last summer, and the girl walked there, so I figured I'd start there, no luck she hadn't been there, but ran into a mother of another girl scout who had the same idea as I did.

I then backtracked from there to her house with my kids keeping an eye out for her on the way, just in case she was walking.

Arrived at her house and her father was talking to the police outside. It got all too real when the cops asked for a picture of her. He was shaken, but seemed relieved when he realized that there were other people out there who just drop everything and come out to help do whatever they can. I told him where we had looked and asked what else we could do after the police left and started their search.

We drove around some more, it was getting dark, not much more I could do without more information, so I went home.

Just got a call, the police found her. That's all I know at this point, but shit, what a nightmare. It wasn't even my kid and I'm freaked out.

If she just wandered off for a few hours without telling anyone where she was, she should be grounded for freakin' life.

1. My heart started racing just reading about it
I'm so glad the police found her and I hope there was no foul play. If it was just a case of her wondering off on her own, then yes, she should be grounded for a very long time! The sheer level of hell her parents were in for those few hours breaks my heart. Thank Goddess for happy endings.

2. Ok, here's what happened.
This kid is really book smart, but damn it, she can't find her way out of a paper bag. She is at least a year ahead in several classes, speaks several languages, etc. but . . . .

She went into the woods after school, guess to walk home, dropped her phone, went back to look for it and got lost!!!

Now, these are not woods as you might think of 'woods'. This is central jersey, not the pine barrens like you may have seen on the Sopranos.

Apparently her feet got so cold, she couldn't walk anymore, and it started getting dark, so she just plopped down and started yelling for help. Luckily the cops heard her and found her.

Glad she's safe, but still. Damn kids!!!!!!!

3. At least she was smart enough to stop and stay in one place.
Most kids would keep walking. I'm glad she's okay.

7. everybody...get used to it. the adolescent brain is unique....
..it does not consider consequences and it is oblivious to danger.....

glad the 11-year-old was found but.....she's going to be a teenager soon, Gawd help us all!

oh, hell, maybe I'm just projtecing my experience with my own kids.
they both scared the living hell out of me a few times.

"Why did you do that?"
"Uh. I dunno."
"Don't you understand you could get hurt or killed?"
"I guess."
and these are bright kids... A's and B's.
bright, at least in terms of book-learnin'.
