Hey Missouri DUers, I have a question: |
|
Is your state name pronounced "Missouruh" or "Missouree?"
I'd always thought the "-ee" eniding was correct, but then I am from Minnesota, and we tend to like our vowels long around here. I have noticed most of the TV talking heads giving it the "-uh" ending and I am curious if they all just got the memo to say it correctly--or if once again they manage to find new and intersting ways to be wrong about stuff.
So help a fella out if you please! :)

1. If you were born in Missouri... |
|
then it's Missouruh; if you moved there, then it's Missouree.
That's what I learned.

2. Hmmm, so how about people who aren't even there saying it, |
|
which way should they go?
When I lived in Louisiana I tried to pronounce things correctly (New Orluns vs. New Orleens) but never adopted the accent. For one thing, I didn't want to come across as a bad impressionist who was making fun of people!
And thanks for the info.

10. That's the one for people from there, in fact sometines the "R" gets left out |
|
I knew is I went for the "Nahlins" pronunciation I'd really come across like a yankee faker. So I stuck with two words, but didn't say "eennzz" at the end.

5. I read an article a few years back in the KC Star |
|
talking about the I-70 divide. Supposedly, those living north of 70 pronounce with the long e at the end while those living south of 70 pronounce with the "uh" at the end.
I live south of 70 but I'm originally from WI. (The same place as another DU'er posting on this thread!) Your guess is as good as mine.
