My debit card was hijacked this morning. |
|
I checked out my bank account on-line and saw two charges for the exact same amount in the "pending transactions" section. I had no recollection of them or receipts outstanding so I called the bank. Sure enough, some asshole in Connecticut ran my number at 4:45 & 5:28 this am. I was of course asleep at that time. The bank canceled my card, and I have to sign a affidavit next week to get the money put back in my account. This never happened to me before, and it kinda pisses me off a bit. It wasn't much money, so I won't go ballistic, but it makes you feel somewhat violated.

Thanks sweetheart... How are you by the way? Hope things are going good for you. I haven't forgot my promise to send you new tunes. We just moved the entire recording studio to a new location, so we should be blasting out the jams here in the next few weeks.

2. I had my identity stolen recently |
|
The thief took out $13,000 in cash advances on one of my credit cards. Luckily, I was able to prove that I did not make those charges and the credit card company has written them off. I also had to sign an affidavit. I also filed a police report. Just in case this person may have more than your debit card number, you might want to check out one of those identity theft deterrent companies. They provide a lot of protection for not much money. I went with Lifelock and that costs $110 a year. The thief that has stolen from me also tried to open up a new credit card account in my name. Thanks to the fraud alerts on my credit report the company was able to verify that I had not applied for that card.

3. My wife had her purse stolen last year |

One charge for 50 bucks worth of gas, but the bank cancelled the card and reimbursed the money. Violation is the right word. You may want to make a police report. We traced the charge to the gas station but unfortunately the cameras did not show the outside lanes (as if the thief knew that.) For a short while the cops were very intent on finding whomever stole the card.

4. Happened to me last week of December |

Incredibly icky feeling. I'm not sure to this day if I dropped my card or is someone took it out of my wallet. Good thing you caught it early.

7. I had an alert put on my checking acct because I thought someone had the number |

No charge for it and it's the best thing I ever did. ANY weird transactions are questioned by the bank.
Sorry to hear that happened to you. It's extremely violating.

8. Happened to me last month |
|
No idea how they got the number, as the card itself has never been out of my possession; possibly I used it online and the thief got the number there. My credit union couldn't even find a phone number associated with the one fraudulent charge; it appeared to have been an online purchase of plane tickets from some Asian airline I'd never heard of. I was amazed at how quickly I got the money back into my account; I think it was about 7 calendar days or a bit less (though it took about 10 days to get a new debit card).
Hope your resolution goes as smoothly!

9. Debit cards are the devil |
|
A lot of POS (which also means Point of Sale) terminals are really not very secure. Ever wonder why you aren't required to input your PIN to buy gas at the pump? It's because the card reader hoovers up all the information on your mag stripe so your PIN is not required.
Gas pumps are the worst offender. Because they can't see into the future and don't know how much gas you are going to pump, they seize something like $75 (just in case) and sometimes those transactions take days to reconcile. Meanwhile, all your information is sitting somewhere on a computer connected to the internet.

It was about three years ago and the time that there were alot of reports in the news about the processing companies getting hacked into or accidentally selling cardholders' info to fraudulent people posing as legit businesses. I had gone shopping and our credit union called and told my husband that the last place I had used it had been hacked into. They cancelled the card and sent a new one but with more and more stories like the above in the news, we just cancelled the new one and destroyed it.
