Even if we caught no fish at all, the wilderness and natural beauth of the landscape combined with the sparseness of people and the bonding with my brothers gives me an inner peace that I can't describe, but I would go insane without.

30. do you happen to remember which road that is?
It looks like 103, but then, most roads in Vermont look like 103 at some point or another.

And I like how they set up a place to pull over, all you get down here in MA is dozens of 'no parking' signs screwing up the scenery. I hate that.

Once I go through this door I feel like I'm home. Two to three months a year I live here, in N-W Michigan, and the rest of the year I dream about it. (It's not so much the house as the place, the memories, and the fun that is always had here.)

Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 10:27 PM by SallyMander
The backyard goes just about down to the beach -- it's totally beautiful. We looked at a bunch of other places, but most of them were INSANELY expensive... like, a $6000 "rental fee" that doesn't actually buy you ANYTHING except for the permission to have an event there. Yikes! My parents yard is just as pretty as any of those spots -- and free! :D

93. it's only 75' tall, but packs a nice punch
It was originally built as The Rocket at Playland in San Antonio, TX and was relocated to Pennsylvania back in 1985 - I first rode it in 1989 and I get there several times each year. It's about a two hour drive from me, but it is one of my favorite places to go and just unwind.

108. It is, for me!
It's not a mega/hyper/massive theme park, there's not a lot of pavement at the park, parking is free and there is no admission fee (you can buy an all-day ride pass or just pay for the rides you want to go on. The food is good and reasonably priced, and this year they're opening the first wooden Flying Turns ride built anywhere since the last one closed in 1969, just a few scant years after I made my debut on this planet.

66. Sorry for the large picture, but here's Meteor Crater in northern Arizona:

I visited there in June of 2004. The crater is in the middle of nowhere in the highlands of northern Arizona, and it's quite a beautiful place. It's the remnant of a meteor impact from 50,000 years ago, and you truly can't imagine the size of the crater until you see it in person. Standing on the rim of the crater, you can see to the horizon (~40 miles) in each direction on a clear day, and with the exception of the observatory and museum (in the picture), you can't see a single man-made structure in any direction. And if you're alone, the only thing you can hear is the wind. This is one of the most serene and beautiful places I have ever visted.

:)

74. I LOVE the sound of the wind...
... that is what I loved about doing palenotology in WY - you could walk over a hill away from the tents/dig site... and just all around you all you would see was waves of prarie grass bending in the winds; it was like an immense ocean of wheat colored grass. It was a truly spiritual experience... especially at night when you could see waaves of grass on the land, and above millions of stars... in WY it's so dark, every night has meteor showers, and you learn to tell time by the satellites overhead.

73. Here are my mental "happy places"
If you meet me IRL, and I'm staring off... I'm likely in one of these locations:

The Badlands of WY...

Be sure to ask about Bertha!

Inside the Parthenon, praising Athena...

Nice reconstruction, eh?

Or just somewhere above it all, in outer space, watching the aurora...

That's a picture from the ISS... and no, I didn't take it :P

89. Seriously I love my new environmentally friendly bed with the
cozy organic and bamboo sheets and microfiber bedspread. I love to crawl in there during the day, put on a relaxation CD and have a good nap. I feel safe and happy there. One of the cats usually joins me.

118. Comfy beds are the bane of my existence.
I NEVER make it to morning classes anymore since I got my memory foam. I wake up and even if I've gotten a full night's sleep, I don't want to get up.

not my pic but you get the idea...

I don't recommend going in the summer, as its extremely hot. Winter the weather is beautiful, not much rain, and the birding is incredible. Airboats are the best way to get around, but I just like to get out in the middle of nowhere and just shut it down and enjoy the beauty (thank heaven for GPS or I'd never get back out...).

18 miles down and back

It took 11 hours.

You're not supposed to do it in one day but sometimes you just gotta say:

What the fuck

And in case you can't tell from this beer belly I'm not in great shape
